Bill Addresses Problem of Independent Contractors Uninsured For Workers' Compensation
Dear Big "I" Member:
At IIAN's request, LB 276 was introduced by Business & Labor Committee Chairman Burke Harr of Omaha, to address the growing problem of independent contractors who do not insure themselves for workers compensation. Yesterday, the Unicameral Business & Labor Committee held a hearing on LB 276, and IIAN members Andy Bassett, Tom Farrell, and Gale Squier testified in support of the bill.
If passed, the bill would provide a voluntary procedure in statute to legally certify independent contractors "up front", and clearly exempt Certified Independent Contractors from workers compensation law in Nebraska. Click here to read why LB 276 is needed in Nebraska. Click here to read LB 276.
ACTION NEEDED ASAP:
Please call/e-mail/fax the Nebraska Senator on the Business & Labor Committee nearest to you by Thursday, February 26, and urge him/her to

Additional Talking Points:
- It will provide an option not now available which would significantly reduce the current large uninsured exposure that hiring parties and their insurance companies now have, while still providing choice for true independent contractors
- LB 276 will not change the definition/status of "employee" in Nebraska
