Technology Corner
Best Practices For Electronic Policy Delivery
Free Webinar For Members - Jan 14
Developed by the Big "I" Agents Council on Technology (ACT), a new report is focused on the "best practices" for policy delivery from the carrier to the agent electronically, as well as from the carrier or agent to the insured by paper or electronically. The intent is to advance our industry practices to meet changing consumer experiences and expectations, rather than to place a "Band-Aid" on our current paper intensive workflows.
Following an industry phase-in period, the ACT work group strongly believes that its recommendations will result in a better customer experience, will reduce our reliance on a costly paper process and will help us compete effectively with direct carriers - while at the same time complying with emerging state and federal regulations.

IIAN Ready For Unicameral Session Starting Jan 8 |
Watch For IIAN's "Capitol Notes" E-Bulletin
When the 2014 Unicameral session starts on January 8, IIAN Legislative Representative Jim Cavanaugh, will be there from the first day to "sine die", scheduled for April 17, 2014. IIAN's Legislative committee, chaired by Bob Hoppe of Columbus, meets regularly with Cavanaugh during the session to pro-actively address issues important to independent insurance agents.
At its meeting on December 12, IIAN's committee determined to continue to pursue increasing Nebraska's minimum motor vehicle liability limits in 2014 -- and will address insurance issues carried over from this year's "long session", including cancellation of HO policies due to weather related losses. See what passed in 2013, and access list of bills carried over to 2014.

Team Up With 4-H In Your County To Support Youth & Promote Your Trusted Choice® Agency |
2014 Local "Life's Choices" 4-H Projects Starting In January
IIAN's continuing partnership with the 4-H Foundation is gearing up now for 2014 - it provides Nebraska Trusted Choice® agencies in counties all over the state the opportunity to promote their agencies locally and be identified with a great cause. The 4-H "Life Choices" program helps young people learn how to prepare themselves for a successful career and interview for the jobs they want - while exposing them, their parents, and educators to insurance career opportunities in Nebraska and the added value of Trusted Choice® independent insurance agencies. Kids who participate in "Life Choices" projects in their communities will compete in four District interview contests, to qualify for the state-level contest at the 2014 Nebraska State Fair. More about Life's Choices Trusted Choice® partnership.

Mid-America Technical Conference Addresses P/C Coverage Problems & Develops Solutions |
Since 1934, the Mid-America Technical Conference has been serving the American agency system as a forum for discussion on topics such as property-casualty coverage, rules, forms, and other technical aspects within the insurance industry. IIAN member Andy Bassett, CPCU, CIC, from Omaha, represented Nebraska Big "I" members at the annual conference held November 3-5, along with a group of agents chosen from their home states to sit down with ISO, ACORD, NCCI, and company representatives to discuss coverage issues, problems and solutions - which are submitted by agents. These discussions often lead to positive change! See success stories. Read Andy's report from 2013 conference. To submit your coverage or rule problems to Andy for the 2014 conference, email abassett@eni-grp.com . |
Missouri ACA Statute Challenged In Court By Navigator Organizations |
The case, entitled St. Louis Effort for AIDS v. Huff, was filed by organizations that are certified under the ACA to provide assistance in helping uninsured Missourians obtain health insurance. The plaintiffs allege that the Missouri statute regulating navigators and certified application counselors funded by the federal government, both prevents them from providing the assistance the ACA requires them to provide to consumers, and prevents consumers from obtaining such assistance. ISO Exclusion For Data Breach Makes Its Way Into CGL & BOP Policies | ISO officially filed multi-state mandatory endorsements which remove any ambiguity over the ability to submit a data breach claim under a CGL or BOP policy. The new forms (including CG 21 06 and 21 07), filed with an effective date of 05/14, exclude coverage for damages arising out of "any access to or disclosure of any person's or organization's confidential or personal information [...] including [...] trade secrets,[...] financial information, credit card information, health information, or any other type of nonpublic information." It also excludes the loss of or loss of use of electronic data. As is customary with emerging exposures, the industry's consensual response is to segregate the new exposure from the better known ones, and address it separately. Adding a specific exclusion will facilitate the company's position that it is not its intent to cover data breach violations. |
Price Gains Slowing Down |
Even though commercial insurance prices increased for the 11th straight quarter - rising by 5% in aggregate during third-quarter 2013 - price gains are slowing down from the 6-7% gains of the past six quarters, according to Towers Watson. Price hikes by line of business were lower in all lines, except for EPL, which saw price increases in double digits. No line of business reported a price decrease. Click here to read the article.
