Truth - Don't Settle!

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32)

A few years ago I was at a particularly bleak point in my journey, caught in a cyclical downward spiral, most often brought on by PMS. As a new mom all those feelings of
inadequacy and disappointment and failure that bubbled beneath the surface at the best of times would explode when that cloud overtook me. One day I was feeling so wretched that I cried out to the Lord in desperation, and He led me to a passage in Isaiah 59. I could so relate to the word pictures in verses 9-15: hoping for light but seeing only darkness and gloom...the groping and stumbling...feeling dead among all

those other vigorous mothers and pastor's wives...the growling and moaning...feeling like God and His help were so far away...my sin multiplying and shouting out against
me. My heart was very skilled at crafting deceitful thoughts, lies designed to devour any crumb of hope for the future, hope for change. Then verse 15 hit me like a ton of bricks...is it really because "truth is lacking"? Could a lack of truth really be at the root of my problem too? Right then and there I sincerely asked God to replace my lies with His truth and bring me back to it continually. And, it's been a gradual process, but I praise Him that He is doing just that in my life!

So what are some of those lies? Yours may be different than mine, but I guarantee we have all operated out of them at some point or another. I'm not talking about big lies like
"there is no God" or "God doesn't love me". Those are pretty blatant, and what I've found is it's the more subtle ones that we tend to buy into without sometimes even realizing it. It's progressive in that way. It may start with a tiny distrust of God's goodness and end up taking us to dark recesses where we should never venture.

In John 8:30-47 Jesus has a most intriguing conversation about truth and lies with a crowd of people, many of whom had just believed in Him. Take a few moments to read this discourse, and put yourself in the people's shoes. Do you listen for His word? Do you welcome His truth? Is His truth in you? If not, Jesus has some pretty harsh things to say! Remember, He is saying these things to people who had supposedly "believed in Him." You see, we naturally believe the lies around us and within us. It's supernatural to listen to Jesus and believe His truth! Oh, sweet sisters, there was a day when I did not listen gladly to the words of God. There wasn't much room in my heart for His truth, and it was not a nice place to be. But praise God that His truth does set us free! Jesus is TRUTH! Whatever disappointments, uncertainties, failures, trials, or temptations we face, I pray that we will be women who immediately stop and seek God's perspective first. May His truth shape our thoughts and attitudes, our emotions and actions and set us free. What lies in your heart need to be replaced with God's truth? What fears are feeding those lies? Drink deeply of His love today, His perfect love that can cast out those fears and allow you to

trust Him completely!
