Gratitude and Goals

It's hard to believe we're nearing the end of 2015 and the competition year, with the holidays fast approaching as well.

Winter is the time to reorganize and set new goals. One of the goals high on my list is to review my insurance needs and make sure my coverage is in line with my current exposures. Our feature article in this newsletter offers you information on just this topic: Liability Insurance. It's vitally important to all horsemen, whether professional or amateur, to know and understand where you might have exposure and liability risks.

I contributed to a recent article on Liability Insurance for the United States Hunter Jumper Association's In Stride magazine as part of their Equestrian Member Life Services Educational Initiative. We include a link to the article series, which addresses a variety of topics you might find beneficial, including long-term contingency and retirement planning, just to name a few.

In addition, our Tip of the Month outlines the new United States Equestrian Federation Vaccination Rule, which goes into effect on December 1, 2015 for the new competition year. If you haven't familiarized yourself with the changes, here's your opportunity to read over how it might impact you.

As we enter into the holidays, we're often reminded how blessed we are. I feel especially thankful to be involved in a sport where we partner with horses, and I look forward to sharing my gratitude this season with my family, friends and the special horses in my life.

Happy Holidays!

Horses Waiting 2
Equine Liability Insurance isn't just for professionals. Anyone who owns, leases or manages horses at home or at the shows needs to protect themselves from unexpected accidents or injuries to third parties.

Protect Yourself With an Equine Professional
Liability Endorsement
The EMO Agency's E. Sue Bopp contributed to the United States Hunter Jumper Association's Equestrian Member Life Services Educational Initiative and offered her insights on Liability Insurance in the November issue of USHJA In Stride magazine.

Here's an excerpt from the article that you can access in full on the USHJA website as well as the entire series, which includes Long-Term Contingency Planning, Retirement Planning and Employer Information Services (to be published in January 2016): http://www.ushja.org/programs/bestPractices/resources.aspx

We all know that riding and working around horses offers inherent risks; after all, we're dealing with 1,000-pound animals with natural instincts and unpredictable behavior.

"One way for professionals to address these risks is to consider adding a Professional Equine Liability Endorsement to a commercial liability policy," said E. Sue Bopp. "This added endorsement may cover you if you become legally obligated to pay for a third-party loss resulting from the rendering or failure to render equestrian professional services.

"Yes, that last sentence was a mouthful, but in the real world accidents do occur, and sometimes they even happen despite professional oversight," she continued. "If an accident happens and the professional is legally obligated to pay damages due to any negligent act, error or omission, professional liability coverage can be vitally important."

While most incidents do not result in bodily injury or property damage and subsequent legal processes, most of us are familiar with instances in which a professional was held liable for a rider or horse injury that occurred during training or competition.

You might be surprised to learn that it's not just trainers who are at risk. Even a person not defined as a professional through the United States Equestrian Federation, such as a judge presiding over a show or a person showing a horse for sale, could become legally obligated to pay for bodily injury and/or property damage to a third party.

The USEF's New Equine Vaccination Rule

On December 1, 2015, the United States Equestrian Federation's Equine Vaccination Rule (GR845) will go into effect, which requires some changes for owners of competition horses. The rule was developed to protect the welfare of the horse and to prevent the transmission of communicable diseases.

1. At Federation-licensed competitions, horses entering the grounds must be accompanied by documentation of Equine Influenza Virus and Equine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonitis) vaccinations within six months prior to entering the stables. Horses not in compliance with this rule may be required to leave the competitions grounds upon request by Competition Management. Documentation should consist of one of the following methods mentioned below. The frequency of vaccine administration should be per the vaccine manufacturers' or veterinarian's recommendations. It is recommended that vaccines are administered by or under the direction of a veterinarian.

2. In the case of vaccines administered by a veterinarian, the exhibitor, upon request by Competition Management, must provide documentation from the veterinarian on documenting that the horse in question received the vaccinations; name of the vaccines and date of vaccine administration.

3. In the case of vaccines administered by a person other than a veterinarian, the exhibitor, upon request by Competition Management, must provide a receipt of the vaccine purchase, which is signed by the owner, or agent with care, custody, and control of the horse; name, serial number and expiration date of the vaccine; and date of vaccine administration.

4. In the case of a horse that is unable to receive either of the vaccinations due to a history of adverse reactions, the exhibitor, upon request by Competition Management, must provide a letter from the veterinarian on official letterhead stating that the horse in question cannot be vaccinated due to medical concerns and a log of temperatures taken twice daily for the seven days prior to entering the competition grounds. These horses must also have their temperature taken and logged twice daily while on the competition grounds. The log of temperatures should be provided to the Competition Management, steward, or technical delegate when requested.

5. Competition Management may not amend or enhance vaccination requirements without prior approval of the Veterinary Committee

For more information about this new rule change, please contact your veterinarian or see www.usef.org and click on Rules & Regulations.

VHSA/EMO Championships

Grace Boston, Mary Elizabeth Cordia and Darby Cole with their awards in the VHSA/EMO Hunter Seat Medal Finals

Mary Elizabeth Cordia has been competing in the Virginia Horse Show Association (VHSA) Finals for several years, leaving nearly every time with an impressive second-placed finish. However, until this year a VHSA Finals victory had escaped the young rider.

This year the 17-year-old from Alexandria, Virginia, finally got her big win, topping the field to win the VHSA/EMO Hunter Seat Medal Final at the Lexington National Horse Show.

The Walter J. Lee Perpetual Trophy was presented to Casey Schmitz as the winner of the VHSA/EMO Horsemanship Championship. The VHSA Horsemanship Championship is a three-phase competition designed to reward young riders who best show expertise in a combination of equine knowledge and riding ability. Riders were scored based 10 percent on a written test, 40 percent on a practicum and 50 percent on their VHSA/EMO Hunter Seat Medal Finals score.

Other VHSA/EMO Medal Finals winners included:

Championship on the Flat--Elizabeth Bailey
Adult Amateur--Carey Hundley
Children's--Sarah Boston
Pony--Helen Lohr

Elizabeth Bailey won the VHSA/EMO Championship on the Flat.
