November

   A Thankful Time of Year

As we approach Thanksgiving, it gives me time to reflect on the many things that I'm thankful for.

I've just returned home from three weeks of competing at the East Coast fall indoor shows. My goal this year was to qualify for Devon and the indoor circuit, and I've come to the conclusion that it wasn't about the destination but the journey.

My partner, Chawton, is priceless! He's helped me fulfill a lifelong dream--not to mention my family, trainers, grooms and veterinarian. The EMO team was also there to support and even fixed a care package for me and my horse when we went to Devon! They also watched my trips online when I was indoors and would email me "Good Luck" wishes when I was on the road. How fortunate I am to be surrounded by such a great group of people!

My passion for horses has allowed me to combine my hobby with business, and all of us at EMO are thankful for the opportunity to provide you with quality products and exceptional service. Thanks to all of you for entrusting EMO for your insurance needs.

We celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th, so if you have the opportunity, please thank a veteran for your freedom!

Professional Liability Insurance isn't just for riders, handlers and trainers. Judges and other officials should consider obtaining coverage for claims of negligence, errors or omissions.

 Understanding Equine Professional Liability Insurance

We all know that riding and working around horses offers inherent risks: after all, we're dealing with 1,000-pound animals with natural instincts and unpredictable behavior.

Yet, those of us who love being with horses understand that aspect of this special relationship and do our best to reduce those risks through responsible training, proper safety precautions and adequate insurance.

One way for professionals to further address these risks is to consider adding a Professional Equine Liability Endorsement to a Commercial Liability Policy. This added policy may cover you if you become legally obligated to pay for a third party loss resulting from the rendering or failure to render equestrian professional services.

Yes, that last sentence was a mouthful, but in the real world accidents do occur, and sometimes they even happen despite professional oversight. If an incident happens and the professional is legally obligated to pay damages due to any negligent act, error or omission, Professional Liability coverage can become vitally important.

While most incidents do not result in bodily injury or property damage and subsequent legal processes, most of us are familiar with instances where a professional was held liable for a rider or horse injury that occurred during training or competition.

But, you might be surprised to learn that it's not just trainers who are at risk. Even a judge presiding over a show or a person showing a horse for sale could become legally obligated to pay for bodily injury and/or property damage to a third party.

 EMO: FAQ

Should You Report Hock Injections To Your Insurance Agent?

In this new section we're highlighting Frequently Asked Questions you have about equine, liability and farm insurance.

Q: My horse received routine hock injections today. Is this something I should report to my insurance agent?

A: Yes, any major veterinary procedure, such as hock injections, should be reported to your insurance agent as soon as possible.

Many people consider hock injections "routine" care, but, in reality, this type of treatment--where a veterinarian injects a substance directly into the horse's joint--is invasive and most often prescribed for a specific lameness or problem.

It's vitally important to report hock injections because if there are any complications after the injections you want to make sure that they would be covered by your insurance. A failure to report the initial treatment could compromise any future claims.

In addition, hock injections are usually to treat a lameness, and if the horse's hocks are injected and the problem continues and requires other treatments, they may not be covered if the initial situation wasn't reported.

It's also extremely important to report any claims in a timely manner. Don't wait until it's time to renew the horse's policy before you report treatments that have been made. By that time, it may be too late.

I went to Kentucky (in April of 2013) and the horse had a breathing issue and had to have surgery," she said. "I didn't know if he would ever do another three-star. This is everything for me."   (Shannon Brinkman Photo)
