January 2013

January Jumpstart

January is a month where everyone gets restarted after the holiday season. Some people choose to travel to various show circuits held around the country, and therefore we thought it would be fitting to give you information on shipping your horse.

Our Tip of the Month speaks to a new interstate shipping certificate available in the South and East that may benefit those who ship out-of-state frequently. And Dr. Joe Davis, of The Piedmont Equine Practice, provides great information on long-distance shipping and useful tips to help your horse arrive at his destination in top shape.

I'm fortunate to have a wonderful horse named Chawton who knows his job and is a true amateur horse. I often tell my friends that everyone should have a horse like this when they are over 50!

This month I had the opportunity to show on the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival circuit in Wellington, Florida, in the Grand Hunter Ring, and I had a great time!  Although I'd been to Wellington as a spectator many times, it was on my "bucket list" to show there. I'll travel back to Florida again in February to Ocala to show and attend the EMO Grand Prix on February 10th.

All of our field agents will be present at the various show circuits around the country and are happy to help you with any questions you may have about insurance coverage. Don't hesitate to contact them when you're out and about.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year, and good luck with achieving your goals for 2013!

ARRIVE IN SHIP SHAPE--
LONG-DISTANCE SHIPPING TIPS

"...like salty peanuts at the bar, electrolytes will encourage them to drink more." --Dr. Joe Davis

It's that time of year again, when many people will relocate their horses to warmer climates for the season or perhaps ship them south for a few competitions a couple of states away.

While transporting horses brings many challenges--from the physical aspect of getting a horse to and from the destination safely and comfortably to keeping him as stress-free as possible to avoid illness--long-distance travel adds another dimension to the typical shipping scenario.

Joe Davis, Jr., DVM, of The Piedmont Equine Practice, Inc., in The Plains, Virginia, took some time from his busy practice to answer a few questions about shipping long distances and offer some tips that you can take to help your horse arrive at his destination happy, healthy and ready for action.

EMO: Meet Field Agent Lisa Boswell

Lisa Boswell

Lisa Boswell is a licensed agent and joined  EMO in 2010. She's a graduate of the  University of Florida and is now attending law  school at Nova Southeastern University,  where she will earn her degree in May.

Lisa is a lifelong equestrian and has been  riding, training and showing horses since the  age of 10. As a horse lover, she's taken an  interest in welfare issues, such as horse  slaughter.

"I wrote an article on legislation banning horse slaughter that was published last  summer in the Florida Bar's Animal Law Committee newsletter," she said. "I did a longer version for my seminar paper that addresses more in depth the issues relating to the subject."

Lisa resides year-round in Wellington, Florida, with her husband, Rob, a prominent equine veterinarian, and their two children.

Interstate Equine Event Permit Debuts

Horse owners who frequently travel out-of-state with their animals for horse shows, events or trail rides can take advantage of a new agreement between southern states that will eliminate the need to obtain a monthly Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).

The Interstate Equine Event Permit shall be valid and accepted by each state that has entered into this agreement. Exceptions by states may be added or deleted, and each state should be contacted in advance of travel for possible exceptions.

This agreement between Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia will allow horse owners to apply for an Equine Event Permit that will be valid for up to six months in any of the listed states.

The state of New York recently confirmed that it will also accept the six-month permit.

"Horse owners have asked for this interstate event permit option for some time," said Richard Wilkes, DVM, state veterinarian with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. "But we had to ensure that we could provide the convenience of a six-month passport while continuing to protect Virginia's equine industry from disease. We have developed the database and record-keeping system and have a memorandum of agreement with 14 states that allow us to move forward with issuing the permit."

Horse owners can apply to obtain an EIEP from their accredited veterinarian and follow the protocols for their respective state, which includes but is not limited to a CVI or health paper/certificate, a valid negative Coggins test, and documented microchip identification or three-view digital photos of the animal.

Owners may also need to demonstrate their ability to perform an abbreviated physical exam that includes taking each horse's temperature, and they will need to record that information on the horse's travel itinerary with each interstate movement.

For more information about the Equine Passport application process, horse owners or veterinarians should contact their state department of agriculture or veterinary services website. Another useful website is USRider, which compiled a list of Transportation Requirements by State.

SBS Farms' Jersey Boy and Jennifer Alfano at the USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals

The EMO Agency, Inc., wishes to congratulate SBS Farms' Jersey Boy and rider Jennifer Alfano for their stellar achievements in 2012, including the coveted USEF National Horse of the Year award!

Jersey  Boy added one of the few titles that had eluded him to his lengthy list of achievements in 2012--a $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals victory. Since the inception of the Derby program four years ago, the classy Hanoverian gelding has dominated the International Hunter Derby rings.

He also leads the International Hunter Derby lifetime earnings list with a total of $196,640. The quintessential Derby horse, Jersey Boy has won a total of 20 USHJA International Hunter Derby classes and three International Hunter Derby series titles in his illustrious career.

In addition to his Derby Finals win in August, Jersey Boy topped the $10,000 International Hunter Derby at the State College Classic (Pennsylvania), the $15,000 International Hunter Derby at Skidmore College Saratoga Classic (New York), and the $50,000 Chicago Hunter Derby.

For her many achievements in the show ring, Jennifer Alfano was awarded the USEF's Emerson Burr Trophy, which is presented to a rider in the hunter divisions in any breed over fences.

Alfano has worked for Susie Schoellkopf and SBS Farms, Inc., for more than 20 years and teamed up with many of the SBS horses to earn top finishes throughout the United States in 2012. With Jersey Boy, Alfano has dominated the USHJA International Hunter Derby circuit and series for the past four years and along the way earned show championships from Florida to Devon (Pennsylvania) to New York.

A two-time World Championship Hunter Rider Professional Rider of the Year, Alfano, of Buffalo, New York, has been named Leading Hunter Rider at the Pennsylvania National, the National and the HITS Ocala Circuit to name just a few. She currently sits second in the USHJA Lifetime Rider Standings, having accumulated $299,650 in International Hunter Derby earnings, $70,000 of which was earned in 2012.

Here at EMO, we are proud to count Susie Schoellkopf and SBS Farms, Inc., as long-time clients and friends.

EMO Congratulates

Harry and Mollie Chapman's Flexible and Rich Fellers at the London Olympic Games.

The EMO Agency, Inc., wishes to congratulate Rich Fellers and Flexible for their enormous achievements in 2012, as well as their culminating United States Equestrian Federation titles: Equestrian of the Year and International Horse of the Year, respectively.

"I'm so happy for Flexible and his owners, Harry and Mollie Chapman. What an amazing career, so far. I truly believe he has plenty more in him, even at 17 years old," Fellers said of the Irish-bred stallion who won the 2012 Rolex FEI World Cup Final and was the highest-placed U.S. horse at the London Olympic Games.

"I was very honored to be voted Rider of the Year, but so disappointed when our flight to Louisville [Kentucky] was delayed and eventually abandoned due to a weather-related missed connection," said Fellers, who was unable to attend the USEF award ceremony. "[My wife] Shelley and I can only imagine what a memorable evening it would have been. Hopefully, the success we had this past year will in some small way motivate the up-and-coming U.S. show jumping stars," he added.

Here at EMO, we are proud to count Harry and Mollie Chapman and Rich and Shelley Fellers as long-time clients and friends.
