Presentation by Vernell Doyle

President, Sharpsburg Historical Society

Garnet Jex (1895-1979), a renowned member of the Washington Society of Landscape Artists, painted many Civil War scenes of the Upper Potomac region as a contribution to the Civil War centennial commemorations in the 1960s. Today, many of these remarkable paintings are part of a collection belonging to the Sharpsburg (Maryland) Historical Society.

At the next Waterford Lyceum, Vernell Doyle, author, teacher, and president of the Sharpsburg Historical Society, will give a presentation on Garnet Jex and these paintings. Ms. Doyle is generously bringing several of the original paintings to this program.

Following the presentation, audience members also have the opportunity, courtesy of Loudoun Mutual Insurance Company, to view the equally stunning collection of Jex paintings of Waterford. These paintings are owned by the Waterford Foundation and are temporarily housed at the offices of Loudoun Mutual.

Please join us on September 15 in Waterford for this special public program. For further information, contact Sherry Satin at 540-882-9677.
