Presidential Bank $20,000 Challenge Grant advances Thank you to all the generous donors who have contributed to the challenge grant offered by Presidential Bank CEO Bruce Cleveland in January. The bank will match every donation dollar-for-dollar until March 31, and we're now more than halfway to the $20,000 goal. The Waterford Foundation is gratefully accepting donations to the Presidential Bank Challenge Grant: online, by telephone at 540-882-3018, ext. 117, or by mail: P.O. Box 142, Waterford, VA 20197. All donations to the Presidential Bank Challenge will directly reduce the debt on the reconstruction of the historic Old School in the Waterford National Historic Landmark District. |
Save the date: May 5 dinner fundraiser
The Waterford Concert Series Committee invites you to joint us for dinner at the beautiful home and gardens of Ellwood following the Waterford performance of famed pianist John O'Conor, at the Old School on May 5.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Ellwood was designed by nationally known architect, Waddy Butler Wood for Lawrence Rust Lee and built in 1911. Set upon gently rolling hills overlooking Leesburg, this gracious home affords open, extended views of Balls Bluff Battlefield and the Potomac River beyond. Ellwood is considered one of Loudoun County's finest Colonial Revival-style homes.
We'll tell you more about this special event soon.

Corner Store has new hours, history exhibits
With the completion of the move of Foundation staff to the Old School, the historic Corner Store has been revamped, and is now open on Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Visitors can pick up walking tour books and a pint of local honey produced from hives on the Phillips Farm, neighbors can come to chat, and all can enjoy rotating exhibits from the Foundation's rich archives collections.
Additional plans are in the works for this choice village center location.

Care to host a Fair artisan? One of the reasons artisans so love the Waterford Homes Tour & Crafts Exhibit is the warm welcome they receive from residents in and near the village, who open their homes year after year to demonstrators who spend three days demonstrating their skills to Fair visitors.
Once again, the Fair Committee is asking for hosts who have spare beds to share for the craftspersons who travel to Virginia for the October Fair. Contact Fran Holmbraker at 540-882-3018 x 114 or by email if you would like to find out more about hosting artisans during the Fair. | Have a spare bed come October? |

Old School House 'Rocks on'
with April 20 concert
Following on the sellout James McMurtry concert last November, you can again dance to the music of home-grown indie music talent, when Janet Emma Garbe takes the stage in the second of our Old School Rocks concerts Saturday, April 20.
Known as "Miss Jan" around Waterford to just about every resident aged 5 & older, Janet Emma Garbe has carried many of the youngest Waterfordians to school for over 15 years on a Loudoun County Public Schools yellow school bus...singing holiday carols at the top of their lungs in December. Her 2009 Release Ghostfields, recorded with Walt Wilkins in Austin, Texas, garnered several Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) nominations.
In 2006, Janet led Loudoun-based band One Horse Town to earn the "Wammie" for New Artist of the Year with Dawn Will Deliver (produced by Jon Carroll and recorded in Leesburg). Janet Emma & Seven West features a few of Washington's finest musicians including Wil Gravatt, David Kitchen, Angus Mackay & Robbie Magruder.
Doors will open at 6:30 for the 7 p.m. concert.
Tickets for this Foundation fundraising concert are $15 apiece, and can be purchased online at the Foundation's website (scroll down to Old School House Rocks tickets).

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT New benches, path improvements greet Phillips Farm hikers |
Stepping stones provide sure footing for stream crossing.
|
Eagle Scout candidate Brandon Morris has completed a project on the Phillips Farm Trail, adding two sturdy benches, stepping stones, planks, and steps where the trail crosses the creek. The benches, one at the dam and one near the halfway point on the trail, provide sturdy seats at choice views for bird and wildlife watching, or just a quiet spot to read a book. We thank Brandon for these fine additions to the Trail. |
