The Upstate Update for Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Health Assement Take It Now April 30 is Deadline to Save $21,000!

Each of the past three years our synod has reached the 65% goal.  More than 65% of our eligible ELCA Primary health plan members and spouses took the Mayo Clinic health assessment and as a result:

  • Congregations in our synod received a 2% discount on 2014 health care contributions.
  • Our synod received an additional 1% to support Wellness programs.

We aren't there for this year yet!   We still need 15 eligible ELCA - Primary health plan members and spouses / same gender partners in our synod to complete the confidential Mayo Clinic Health Assessment by April 30.  Taking the assessment will help all of our synod's portico participating congregations and organizations save a collective $21,000 in ELCA health contributions in 2015.

If you have a spouse on the ELCA health plan, remind him or her to register for a spousal myPortico account and complete the health assessment. The steps are simple:

  1. Ask your spouse to locate his or her Portico "Member ID" and "SVC." These were mailed to each spouse in February, and will be again in March. If you cannot locate these numbers, spouses (not members) can obtain them over the phone by calling 800.352.2876, Portico's Customer Care Center. (Spouses need to use their own Member ID and SVC to create an account, not the member's.)
  2. With these two numbers in hand, have your spouse go to https://myportico.porticobenefits.org/ select the "Register Now" button, and follow the online instructions to register.
  3. Once registered, sign in to https://myportico.porticobenefits.org/  and select the "Go to Mayo Clinic Healthy Living" button to complete the health assessment, and to begin follow-up activities to earn all $500 wellness dollars.

And remember, by taking the assessment, you'll be taking stock of your health and earning $150 in wellness dollars.  Healthy leaders do enhance lives and ultimately create a healthier ELCA community.  If your spouse has ELCA - Primary health benefits and completes the Mayo Clinic Health Assessment, too, you'll receive another $150 wellness dollars into your wellness account, and will help us earn our synod-wide 2% discount on health contributions.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Gospel of Mark ends abruptly. The women came to the tomb to care for the body of their friend and Lord. They expected death. Seeing the stone rolled away, they entered the tomb; they entered into death. They didn't find Jesus. Instead, they saw a young man, who told them not to be amazed, that Jesus had risen. This same stranger told them to tell the disciples and then head to Galilee. Is it any wonder that terror and amazement seized them?

We are on the other side of the first Easter. We have grown used to the story of the resurrection. The good news brings hope and comfort. It brings freedom and joy. But I don't think it causes terror and amazement. Maybe we are missing something. The Greek word for amazement, "ekstasis", means "change of place." And that is what has happened to us and all of creation because of the resurrection. Before Easter, we stood in a place of sin and death. After Easter, we stand in a place of forgiveness and life. Everything has changed. We are not the same. The world is not the same. The deadly, but familiar, way of the world can no longer be counted on. This new reality of forgiveness, life and salvation is and should be unsettling. Terror and amazement indeed!

The world is turned upside down. It might look the same, but we are standing in a different place. Christ is risen. We are risen. Alleluia!
