PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS

If your son or daughter has made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, they could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C. by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award!  Even more importantly, they could win recognition that might inspire other young people to follow their example.  To apply, your son or daughter will need to:

  1. Visit http://spirit.prudential.com or at www.nassp.org/spirit and follow the on-screen instructions
  2. Once you have completed the online application and student/parent agreement, email or print and deliver the certification page to Mr. Dunne's office by November 4, 2014
  3. SMCHS will select local honorees from the applicants.  The local winners will be nominated for state-level judging.
Auxiliary Studies Program (ASP)

Federal and state laws require public schools to provide free and appropriate education for children with disabilities. While Santa Margarita Catholic High School has the Auxiliary Studies Program, a fee-based support program for students with mild learning and attention issues, there are free programs offered in the public schools throughout Orange County including an assessment or evaluation for special education services. Please click here to read the public notice from the Orange County SELPA (Special Education Local Plan Area). You may also contact Michelle Stout in the ASP office at StoutM@smhs.org for information on assessments or evaluations available through the local school districts or through Santa Margarita's Auxiliary Studies Program (ASP).

PINK RIBBON CLUB RAISES $3300 FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Throughout the month of October, the SMCHS Pink Ribbon Club was hard at work to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.   Last week, the club organized the Coins for the Cure fundraising drive in which the student body helped to collect more than $3000. The money will be donated to the Rainbows of Hope program organized through St. Joseph's Regional Health System. Rainbows of Hope offers assistance to low-income women who would not normally have the resources available for early detection screenings, mammograms and care. The club was also on hand at last Friday's football game, which was a "pink out" to support breast cancer awareness. The club handed out information about breast cancer and women's health and collected an additional $300 in donations.  Before the start of the game, everyone who is currently or who has been affected by Breast Cancer was invited to stand so the SMCHS community could honor them for their hope, faith and strength.  Click here to view pictures from Friday's pink-out game.

JUNIOR TEAMS UP WITH SM TO COLLECT LUGGAGE FOR FOSTER CHILDREN

More than 250 pieces of luggage lined the driveway of the Violette home this week following junior Alexa Violette's Childhelp luggage drive at SMCHS.  As an active member of the Childhelp organization, Alexa teamed up with Santa Margarita to collect pieces of luggage for children living in foster homes.  Between her donations from the SMCHS community and the Goodwill, Alexa collected more than 250 pieces of luggage. Click here to read the full story.

EARLY DISMISSAL DUE TO ILLNESS

Students who are too sick to remain in school are required to visit the Nurse's Office before making arrangements to go home. The Attendance Office will not release sick students from school until they have been assessed by the Nurse. If your student becomes sick while at school, please direct him/her to the Nurse's Office and the Nurse will call you if the student needs to go home.
