CIRQUE DU SANTA MARGARITA PROVIDES THRILLING HOMECOMING EVENTS
SMCHS Homecoming 2014

Aerialists, fairies and stilt walkers, oh my!  From the Homecoming rally, to the pregame tailgate and football game, to the ever-popular Homecoming Dance, SMCHS' Homecoming theme, Cirque du Santa Margarita, provided dazzling sights for all throughout the weekend.  It was truly a Homecoming to remember.  Thank you to the Activities Office, ASB and the Alumni Office for a great week of events!  Click here to read more about Homecoming and view the photo album.

Volunteers needed!  Help us achieve record-breaking results by volunteering at our most important fundraiser!  Join other SM parents, alumni parents, faculty and staff to help us make this an unforgettable evening. PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS

If your son or daughter has made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, they could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C. by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award!  Even more importantly, they could win recognition that might inspire other young people to follow their example.  To apply, your son or daughter will need to:

 

  1. Visit http://spirit.prudential.com or at www.nassp.org/spirit and follow the on-screen instructions 
  2. Once you have completed the online application and student/parent agreement, email or print and deliver the certification page to Mr. Dunne's office by November 4, 2014 
  3. SMCHS will select local honorees from the applicants.  The local winners will be nominated for state-level judging.
EAGLES FOR CHOC RAISES $4K FOR CHOC WALK
Congratulations to the Eagles for CHOC Club for exceeding their $3,000 CHOC Walk fundraising goal! More than 40 students, family members and friends represented SMCHS last Sunday at the 24th Annual CHOC Walk in the Park at Disneyland, raising over $4,000 to benefit pediatric patients at Children's Hospital of Orange County. The SMCHS Eagles for CHOC Club was the fourth top fundraising School team!  Club member and CHOC Walker, Cavin McClare, was the winner of the 1-day Disneyland Park Pass provided by the Eagles for CHOC Club.

SMCHS DEBATE TAKES SECOND AT OCSL NOVICE TOURNAMENT


Congratulations to the Speech & Debate Team for their outstanding performance at the OCSL Novice tournament! The Eagles won second place overall. First place in Public Forum went to Shane Cobb and Maddy Finlayson. Third place went to Andrew Senkowski & Trevor Sperle; third place impromptu-Ella Valencia; third place Congress-Morgan Delaney.

CETA TO JUDGE TALON THEATRE'S "THE LITTLE PRINCE"
A team of professional theatre educators from the California Educational Theatre Association (CETA) will attend the production of THE LITTLE PRINCE over the weekend of October 29 - November 1, 2014.  Adjudicators will be evaluating the acting including tempo, projection, character choices, directing including use of stage, and technical effects including lights, sound, costumes, makeup and props and the overall effectiveness of the production.

This marks the first time SMCHS has entered the CETA competition. Students have the opportunity to receive certificates of merit for individual performances and design and the overall production will be evaluated.  Click here to read the full story. 

 

MINI MASCOT PROGRAM



The SM Pep Squad is proud to offer the Mini Mascot Program!  For $100 your child can be a Mini Mascot for an SMCHS Football Game!  Proceeds will benefit the SMCHS Pep Squad.  Three Mini Eagles ages 3 to 8 years old will have the opportunity to join the official Eagle Mascot on the field during the 2nd quarter of Varsity home games.  The Mini Mascots will parade the field with the Eagle mascot and lead cheers in front of the crowd during the 2nd quarter.  Click here for more information and to find out how to sign up your Mini Eagle!

Eagle Football vs. Orange Lutheran

 

The Eagle football team will matchup with Orange Lutheran this Friday, October 17 at Saddleback College at 7:30. This will be the 11th meeting between the Eagles and the Lancers. Both teams go into Friday night's game sitting at 0-1 in league play and neither team wants to fall to 0-2. The game will be streaming live on Fox Sports West's Prep Zone

 

Breisacher Earns OC Varsity Athlete of the Week for Girls Tennis

  

The Eagles junior posted a 9-0 singles clip in team victories over No. 5 San Clemente, Orange Lutheran and No. 10 JSerra last week. After an 0-2 start to the season, Breisacher has led Santa Margarita to nine straight wins, effectively positioning the Eagles atop the Trinity League standings.

Girls Tennis Remains Hot as they win their 11th Straight Match


The SMCHS girls' tennis team just notched their 11th straight match after defeating St. Margaret's yesterday, 15-3. The girls' tennis team is also riding another hot streak which includes eight straight league championships dating back to 2006. The team is seeking their 9th straight title this year. The last time the Eagles were not league champions, singles standout Katie Chang was seven years old.

The Eagles are now ranked number four in Orange County and are led by the stellar play of Katie Chang and Kristina Breisacher as well as a host of other Eagles. Santa Margarita has kept opponents under seven points dating back to September 20th and is now outscoring their opponents 163-65. The Eagles are back at it again today when they travel to Mater Dei to take on the Monarchs.

Retreats

Freshman retreats:  It's never too early to sign up for the freshman retreat in November.  Dates are Monday November 10th leave school at 2:30 pm and return time is Tuesday 11th at 2:30 pm.  Students would miss one day of school on Tuesday the 11th. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Service Immersion

 

There is a SMCHS sponsored service immersion trip to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the largest no-kill animal shelter in the nation, scheduled for December 27, 2014 - January 3, 2015. Best Friends, located in the "Golden Circle" of national parks (Zion, Grand Canyon, Bryce) of Southern Utah, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.  It owns nearly 3,700 acres, and leases another 17,000 acres of state and federal land, in the majestic red rock country of Southern Utah, just outside the town of Kanab. The Sanctuary is home on any given day to about 1,700 animals. Most of these are dogs and cats, but there are also horses, burros, birds, rabbits, goats, pigs, and an assortment of other creatures. Students will volunteer, working with the animals and their care-givers as well as explore this amazing landscape and its history. Childhelp Luggage Drive

SM student, Alexa Violette, will be hosting a luggage drive on October 13th-17th for the ChildHelp foundation.  Childhelp is a leading national non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect. Childhelp's approach focuses on prevention, intervention and treatment.   Any new/ slightly used luggage is being accepted and will be given to the children in orphanages and homes. The luggage will be distributed to the children who have to move from house to house with only being able to take their belongings in a plastic hefty bag. Luggage may have logos but cannot have a name stitched on it.  All luggage can be dropped off in the Campus Ministry/Activities Office.  Thank you for your support!  

Mini College Fair

 

The Counseling Department is hosting a mini college fair during both lunches on Wednesday, October 22. There will be a number of different colleges attending that day and students and parents are encouraged to stop by to speak with the representatives and gain more information on the different schools. Students do not need to register in advance, just come by during your lunch to say "hi". Schools in attendance at this time include (but are subject to change) Marist College, Purdue University, Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, University of Alabama, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS), University of Massachusetts, Lowell University of Missouri, University of New Mexico and University of Oklahoma.

 

Mothers Club Coffee

The next monthly Mothers Club Coffee will take place on October 23, at 8am in the Banquet Center.  This month's topic is "The Secret to Competing in High School..." and will feature guest speaker Dr. Casey Cooper.  Dr. Cooper will be discussing how to improve student/parent/teacher/coach relationships.  Click here for more information.       
Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week begins October 23 and continues through October 31st.  Red Ribbon Week kicks off with a special guest speaker for our Assembly on Thursday the 23rd.  The following Red Ribbon Dress Days are:

 

10/23: Wear red with jeans or shorts with at least 6" inseam

10/24: Wear pink with jeans or shorts with at least 6" inseam ("pink-out" at the football game vs. Servite, 7 PM, Saddleback College)

10/27: SM uniform

10/28: Too bright for drugs accessory day: wear sun glasses or bright colored accessories with school uniform

10/29: Put a lid on drugs accessory day: wear a cap/hat with school uniform

10/30: SM uniform

10/31: SM uniform (seniors have jeans day)

3rd Annual Turkey Fundraiser

The Girls and Boys Water Polo teams have kicked off their 3rd annual Turkey Fundraiser.  The teams are again selling turkeys, hams and prime ribs for your holiday season.  When planning for your holiday meals please consider purchasing your meats with the teams and donating a Turkey to a deserving Military Family.  Last year with generous donations from many Eagle families we were able to send 100 Turkeys to the 11th Unit MEU at Camp Pendleton.  Click here to place your order.  All orders must be in by October 24. Holiday Greens Fundraiser

The Boys and Girls Cross Country team will be holding their annual Holiday Greens Fundraiser throughout October.  Choose from a variety of fresh cut evergreen wreaths, garland and centerpieces for the Christmas holidays.  All evergreens are cut fresh in the Pacific Northwest, are 100% guaranteed and will be delivered to the school the first week after Thanksgiving.  We also offer convenient direct delivery option for sending greens to friends or family not living in the area ( shipping price is already included) You can place your order through any cross country member or contact Jody Bowen  ( 949) 433-5955.   The order deadline is October 29 so hurry and place your order today.  Thanks for supporting the Boys and Girls Cross Country program.

Talon Theatre Fall Production
 
Talon Theatre presents their fall production of "The Little Prince" and "Let Your Life Sing" on Oct. 29 -Nov. 1 in the Black Box. The beautiful one act show "The Little Prince," will be followed by a fabulous original cabaret style, "Let Your Life Sing," featuring songs from hit musicals! What's Your Santa Margarita?

Share information about our annual Open House with your friends! Santa Margarita's Fall Open House is scheduled for Sunday, November 2.  Families will have the opportunity to tour the campus, meet SMCHS faculty and staff and learn why SMCHS is considered one of the top private schools in the nation. No reservations are necessary, simply drop by any time between 11 am and 2 pm. Two brief presentations will be held at noon and 1 p.m. in the school's Moiso Family Pavilion.

Senior Cruise

 

One of the most anticipated events as a Senior at Santa Margarita is the Senior Cruise!

Senior Cruise takes place on Thursday, November 6th from 8-11pm.

 

Ticket prices:

October 1 - 31 (at midnight): $70 per person

November 1 - 4 (at 3 PM): $90 per person

No tickets will be sold on November 5-6 or at the door.   

   

Permission Slips & Contracts are due to Activities by November 4th at 3pm and must be turned in with a copy of your Senior Cruise ticket receipt.

Renee Bondi and Tony Melendez Concert at Christ Cathedral

Quadriplegic singer/speaker, Renée Bondi, is thrilled to share the stage this year with guitarist Tony Melendez as she celebrates the bountiful blessings that our Lord has provided on Friday, November 14th at Christ Cathedral.  Come see why Tony, born without arms, has been her inspiration for years! Christmas Tree Fundraiser

The Christmas Tree Fundraiser is up and running.  Trees may be pre-ordered up until November 25th.  Tree pick up will take place in the front parking lot on December 6th between 9 AM - 12 PM.  Delivery is available for additional cost.  Trees are also available for purchase to donate to US Marine Corps.  We will transport donated trees to Camp Pendleton for military families unable to purchase their own tree.  Please visit our Christmas Tree Fundraiser page for more information!

Moms in Prayer

If you are not praying for your child, who is? Every Thursday in the Sacred Heart Chapel a group of Moms get together to pray for your child, your child's teacher and all the prayer intentions of those that are gathered in prayer. Student IDs

Attention all students: this is reminder that it is school policy to carry your student ID with you at all times, including when making purchases in the lunch lines, bookstore and Activities.  Please come to the Activities office if you need an ID card or lost your ID card

Scrip

 

The SMCHS scrip program has a new addition - Papa John's Pizza - $10 denomination (8%).

As mentioned before, Ralph's does not provide the school with a report of family contributions so as to protect their customers' privacy.  However, they do donate to SM through the Ralphs Community Contribution Program.  Participants are required to register for the new term at www.ralphs.com beginning September 1; not before.  Step-by-step instructions can be found at their website noted above.  Click on Community, click on Community Contributions, click on "For participant questions, click here."  If you have any questions regarding this process, please call Ralphs at 800-443-4438.  Scrip may be purchased at the school's Front Desk on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.  Please direct any questions regarding the SMCHS scrip program to Catherine Hassen at 949-766-6004 or hassenc@smhs.org
