Greetings Eagle Family!

What a busy summer we have had in the Santa Margarita Catholic High School Alumni Office.

We kicked off the summer in early June with the First Annual Alumni Swim Races and BBQ, celebrated reunions with the Class of 2009 and Class of 1994, held the 6th Annual Sarah DeMille 5K Memorial Run and just finished a great weekend at Angel Stadium for Alumni Day.

With our school year now kicked off, we want to remind you to mark your calendars for our Class of 2004 10-Year Reunion on October 4, 2014 at the Balboa Yacht Club and our Annual Homecoming Tailgate Party on October 10 at Saddleback College

Wishing you many happy last days of summer filled with memories shared with family and friends.

Class of 2009 5-Year Reunion
The Class of 2009 celebrated their 5 Year Reunion on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Dave & Busters in the Irvine Spectrum.  The classmates enjoyed music, food, dancing and games while reminiscing about the good old days at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Click here to view photos from the event.
6th Annual Sarah DeMille 5K Memorial Run Brings Community Together

On Saturday, July 19, Santa Margarita Catholic High School celebrated the 6th Annual Sarah DeMille 5K Memorial Run. The run is held in memory of Santa Margarita alumna Sarah DeMille '05 who passed away while at college in 2006 as a result of an automobile accident. During her time at SMCHS, Sarah was a dedicated four-year cross-country runner. Coaches describe her as having had a special spirit, one that was contagious and showed her dedication, hard work and commitment to everything she did. Sarah also left her mark at Applied Medical, the company where she spent two summers working as an intern.

Following the accident that tragically cut Sarah's life short, Applied Medical began a scholarship fund in her memory. The Sarah DeMille Memorial Run was then created to fund the scholarship, which is awarded each year to a Lady Eagle Runner who possesses the same qualities that Sarah did. The sixth annual 5K helped secure more than $20,000 for the scholarship fund.

This year, the trail was filled with alumni, students, families, friends, and runners from across the country who attended to support the event. More than 350 runners raced in support of the memorial event. The morning also included a "Future Eagle" Fun Run for those 10 years and younger, a pancake breakfast, local vendors and opportunity prizes, all of which helped raise funds for the scholarship.

Luke Maillard of Phoenix, Arizona who attends Brophy Prep High School took first place in the general run with a time of 17:56. Alexis Wright, 12, of Highland, Utah came in first on the ladies side with a time of 20:27 followed by Santa Margarita senior Sheridan Scifres of Coto de Caza who came in at a close second with a time of 21:13.  Read more here and enjoy the video.  Click here to view our sponsors and vendors.

Class of 1994 Celebrates 20 Years

The Class of 1994 celebrated their 20 year reunion on Saturday, Aug. 2 at the El Adobe de Capistrano restaurant in San Juan Capistrano. It was a beautiful summer night spent walking down memory lane. The restaurant was bustling full of hugs, laughter and many memories both past and present. The 130+ former Eagles were joined by past SM faculty to really make the evening a special one.

The reunion committee of Jodie Julian Cerruti, Lisa Paulsen Hartung, Michele Morris Linaweaver, Aaron Maldonado, Chris Rochon and Patrick Strader put together a wonderful reunion weekend filled with golf, a social event and a fun reunion.

Classmates traveled from all over the world to be together and reminisce about old times and what is happening today. During the evening the class had the opportunity to watch a video and visit the memory table that sparked fond and sentimental emotions as they relived their four years of high school.

Eagle Alumni Head to Angel Stadium

On Sunday, Aug. 9, approximately 50  members of the Eagle alumni family enjoyed an Angel game together. The morning kicked off with a tailgate hosted by the Alumni Office and then we headed to the ballpark! It wasn't a great day for the Angels, as they lost to the Red Sox, but it was an opportunity for Eagle alumni to spend time together and meet some new faces. We look forward to getting more Eagles to the stadium next summer!

Eagle Athletics Claims Seventh Commissioner's Cup in School History

The CIF Southern Section recently announced their top ten boys and girls' athletic programs for the 23rd Annual Commissioner's Cup with the SMCHS girls program receiving top honors.

With the winners being determined by a point system, SMCHS totaled 20 points by way of four CIF-SS Championships in water polo, basketball, soccer and swimming and diving. This marks the fourth time the SMCHS girls program has won the Commissioner's Cup with the boys taking top honors three times. SMCHS and Loyola, an LA-based all boys Jesuit school, have won the Commissioner's Cup more than any other school with seven. The Eagles now trail only Corona del Mar High School on the girls side, who have five, and possess the most Cups between the boys and girls programs in Orange County.

The SMCHS boys' program won the Cup three consecutive year from 1996-1998, with the girls program winning in 1999, 2000, 2003, and 2014.

Winners are determined by a point system with divisional championships earning five points, runner-up finishes three points, two points for advancing to the semifinal round or a third place finish in a team-place finish sport (i.e. cross country, golf, swimming and diving, track and field); and one point for a fourth place finish in a team-place finish sport. In cases where a tie occurs the top ten schools were determined by several tie-breaker methods.

On the boys' side, SMCHS finished eighth with 10 points from their CIF Championships in basketball and baseball.

Spirit Soars with the Junior Eagle Pep Squad

The SMCHS Pep Squad recently hosted their summer camp for future cheerleaders and songleaders. While at camp, the 110 participants of the Junior Eagle Program learned cheers, dance routines, and the value of friendship and teamwork.  The Junior Eagles are scheduled to perform at the Varsity Football Game on Sept. 12, in the Pep Squad Showcase at SM on Nov. 20 and again during the basketball season.  The current SM Pep Squad and coaches were thrilled to work with such young and aspiring talent!
