A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL DUNNE
|
Dear Parents:
With the end of classes and Graduation for the Class of 2014, the 2013-14 academic year has come to a close. Congratulations go out to our graduates on all the accomplishments they leave as their legacy to SMCHS. Now as they head off to colleges and universities across the country, with over $33 million in scholarships, we as a community can take pride that the young men and women of this class came our way in back in 2010. The Lord blessed them in so many ways and in turn their presence amongst us was a blessing to our faculty and staff.
As the school year ended more honors continued to be bestowed on SM students. Talon Theatre's fantastically talented artists and staff were recognized as the top musical show at the annual M.A.C.Y. awards with numerous individual honors given to members of the theatre program. On June 6th the varsity baseball team completed a successful run through the playoffs winning the CIF Division 1 Championship in a game played at Dodger Stadium. A great team effort by a super team! At the end of the game, I could tell the players didn't want to walk out of the stadium, in hopes of keeping the "feeling alive" but they will have the memory for a lifetime!
During the month of May, over 350 students took 452 I.B. exams along with 530 students taking 954 A.P. exams; for the year, six teams won CIF championships and nine individual CIF championships were claimed. Our performing and visual artists shared their multi-faceted talents with us through numerous shows, concerts and performances and through our clubs and organizations, students helped others in many positive and impactful ways. Underlying the entire year was our vibrant faith life with students providing service to hundreds of people through our grade level service projects; along with our dynamic retreats, meaningful and spiritual liturgies and times of prayer and song it was an incredible year of faith; it was a great year to be an EAGLE!
Our charism, Caritas Christi was clearly evident in so many ways during this school year. The love of Christ is that which permeates our campus and its students, families, faculty and staff. To the parents of the Class of 2014 who are receiving their last Eagle Update (unless you have continuing/entering students) thank you for your support of SMCHS and for entrusting your sons and daughters to us for their high school education; we wish them the very best. For all SM families, may our Lord extend His blessings upon all of you this summer; enjoy relaxation and rejuvenation where you can and I look forward to seeing you all when school begins again in August.
Caritas Christi,
Ray Dunne

BASEBALL SECURES FIRST CIF CHAMPIONSHIP
|
|
Congratulations to our 2014 boys' baseball team for securing the Division 1 CIF Championship Friday night at Dodger Stadium with their victory over Foothill High School, 3-1. The Eagles rode the right arm of UCLA-bound Griffin Canning's 11 strikeouts and had sparks of offense from Jordan Steele and Nick Meyer to outlast the Knights. The championship marked the sixth CIF championship of the school year. Along with 9 CIF individual titles, it was a record shattering year for the Eagles with more CIF team and individual titles claimed in one school year than ever before in Santa Margarita's history.

SEVERAL EAGLES EARN EAGLE SCOUT RANK
|

Congratulations to our SMCHS students and recent graduates who achieved the rank of Eagle. The Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the Boy Scout of America program. The 1911 "Handbook for Boys," the first publicly available edition, introduced the Eagle Scout Award. Just 23 Scouts had earned the Eagle badge in 1912. More than 2,000 earned the honor in 1922. More Scouts than ever - over 50,000 - now achieve the Eagle Scout ranking each year. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than 2 million young men. Click Here to see which Eagles earned the rank of Eagle Scout this past school year.

SM SWIMMER EARNS FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
|

A year removed from Kaitlyn Merritt being named the OC Register's Female Athlete of the Year after being crowned the California State Champion in the Pole Vault, another underclassman took home the same top honors with junior Katie McLaughlin earning the OC Register's Female Athlete of the Year.
McLaughlin, a four-time CIF Champion as an Eagle, also set a National Record in one of those races, the 100-yard butterfly in an impressive time of 51.78.
First year head coach Brian Weathersby was also honored at the OC Register end of the year banquet, earning girls' water polo coach of the year honors. Weathersby helped guide the Eagles to their second consecutive Trinity League Championship and successfully defended the division 2 CIF Championship crown as the Eagles defeated Mater Dei for the second consecutive year.
Joining Weathersby on the coach's podium was Chuck Morales after being named the OC Register's girls' soccer coach of the year. Morales helped guide the soccer team to a division 1 CIF Championship with their victory of Edison High School, 3-0, their first CIF Championship since 2002. The girls' also clinched their fifth consecutive Trinity League championship.
