EAGLE UPDATE

A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL DUNNE

Lenten Greetings to all SMCHS Parents:

Joining Catholic-Christians around the world yesterday, we began our observance of the sacred season of Lent with a beautiful Mass celebrated by Bishop Kevin Vann.  It was wonderful to have him with us once again.  As you enter the SM campus you will note subtle but telling differences that we are in Lent.  The trees all have purple ribbons tied around them and the Stations of the Cross are placed throughout campus so that individuals as well as classes may follow our Lord's journey to Calvary.  Our morning prayer includes a Lenten antiphon and school reconciliation services will soon be held.  We join with the whole Church on a Lenten journey of prayer, denial and good works   as we await the glory of the Resurrection at Easter.

Tomorrow part of the call to good works will take place on our campus as the Sophomore Class hosts the Special Olympics as their class Christian Service project.  Students from twenty schools will be on campus for this wonderful event.  A big thank you to Mrs. Peg Dzida for all the hard work she puts forth in giving our students this great opportunity to be living examples of Caritas Christi.

We have experienced what has to be described as a fantastic winter season of sports and activities.  Our pep squads, dance team and color guard have all come back from competitions with first places/grand champion status.  Our athletic teams have astounded and amazed with Boys' Soccer reaching the CIF quarter finals and Girls' Soccer has played their way into the CIF Championship game.  Also heading to championship games are our Girls' Basketball and Boys' Basketball teams while Girls' Water Polo successfully defending their CIF Championship by again defeating league rival Mater Dei.  Two of our wrestlers, Nathan Fier and Jeff Holsinger emerged as CIF Champions and Jeff continues on to the State meet this weekend. There is no doubt that all this success supports the common refrain, "It is a Great Day to be an Eagle!!"

Later this month on the 20th, our Instrumental Music and Choral programs within the Performing Arts Department will hold their annual concert, again this year at the beautiful  Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa.  This year the Visual Arts Department will join in holding an art show in the lobby of the center.  It will be a wonderful evening showcasing an amazing amount of talent!

Last week you should have received an email letter from me formally announcing our One to One computer program for next year.  One question that has been asked is about the device itself and how you secure it.  The school will be securing over 1700 Lenovo Yogas and will upload them with all the necessary software.  Families should not buy their own as it would not have the necessary educational and security software on it.  As mentioned in the letter, there are dates established over the summer for students to come to campus and obtain their device and receive training.  You will be notified when you may register your son/daughter for one of the sessions. I would also encourage parents to attend one of the One to One informational workshops we will have for you in the coming months.  The cost associated with the device is not just for the device but for the software, the training, insurance and repair.  We will have a fully staffed resource center in the library for students who need assistance with or repair of their Yoga.  Additionally it looks as if fifty per-cent or more of our books will be some form of digital resources/ E-BOOKS which in most cases results in a saving on book purchases.  This is a big program and we want to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible.  I encourage you to go to our Ed Tech FAQs page where you may get some immediate questions answered.

We will be instituting one other change next year with the elimination of the fixed (non-rotating) zero period.  All classes will rotate through the day.  The original intent for the fixed period was to accommodate students taking an on-line class.  The numbers registered for an on-line class do not warrant having the vast majority of the school 'locked in to' starting the day with the same period.  In addition many members of the faculty have shared that the kids in zero period tend to be more tired and not as engaged which makes perfect sense given that they start the school day with this period four out of five days a week.

Finally, we are looking forward to April 2nd when our Freshman Class of 2018 attends their scheduling night. The class looks to be extremely well prepared and we are so very happy and proud to welcome them and their parents as the newest members of the Eagle Family!

As we journey the forty days of Lent let us always remember that we are journeying with our Lord as He moves towards His Passion, Death and Resurrection.  The death Christ suffered on the Cross is the ultimate expression of love; may each of us reflect that love to one another on our Lenten journeys.

Caritas Christi,

Ray Dunne
