Principal's Corner

Dear Parents:

"Alleluia, Christ is Risen!"   Our Easter acclamation should bring all of us joy during the fifty days of the Easter liturgical season up to the Feast of Pentecost. Not sure if many of you saw the History Channel's series on the Bible which concluded on Easter Sunday but watching the last two episodes which covered Christ's ministry, passion, death and Resurrection was truly an uplifting experience and served as a great reminder: that the love for us that Jesus' death and Resurrection demonstrates has no more meaning than words on a page if we do not live that love each day, if we are not Caritas Christi to one another; for as scripture says, "So Faith, Hope and Love remain; the greatest of these is Love." (1 Corinthians 13) Let this be in our thoughts and in our actions as we proclaim our Easter alleluias!

With the coming of April the end of the school year moves closer but there is so much happening between our return to school on the 8th and the end of school on June 7th. A few things during this month that I hope you keep in mind.

On Tuesday the 16th we will welcome our new Freshmen, the Class of 2017 to campus for their scheduling night beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Moiso Pavilion (gym).

On the 17th as a school community we will celebrate the Lord's Resurrection with an all school Mass. This will be our Easter celebration and of course parents are invited to join us at 9:00 a.m. in the Moiso Pavilion.

I invite all of you to attend a performance of Beauty and the Beast, performed by our Talon Theatre in the Dome, April 18-21. More information can be found at the SM website. The students and adults leading them have worked very hard for the past months and I know we all will see a great show.

On Tuesday the 23rd at 7:00 in the Eagle Athletic Center's banquet room our annual Town Hall meeting will take place. This is a good opportunity to learn more about the many things happening at SMCHS.

Of course the month will be filled with many athletic events as Eagle teams push towards CIF competition. One of those, the Ice Hockey team, recent winners of the National High School Ice Hockey Championship will be honored by the Anaheim Ducks at the April 8th game and then a month later by the City of RSM. As principal I am very proud of their fantastic accomplishment!

All these events and more continue to prove what I say all the time, "It is a Great Day to be an Eagle!"

Caritas Christi,

Ray Dunne

Principal

Four SMCHS Students Named National Merit Finalists

Four Santa Margarita Catholic High School students were recently named National Merit Finalists, an elite honor less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide who took the Preliminary SAT achieved.

The four Santa Margarita Finalists are Jordan Francis of Irvine, Chris Kateyiannis of Trabuco Canyon, Nicole Minkina of San Clemente and Alexander Mott of Rancho Santa Margarita.

About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. From this initial screening, 16,000 Semifinalists were chosen and have now been narrowed down to 15,000 Finalists.

Finalists go on to compete for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered in the spring.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation was established in 1955 to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The scholarships honor the nation's scholastic champions.

Finalists must have an outstanding academic record and be recommended by the school's principal. From this group all scholarship winners will be chosen.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2013 will be announced in four nationwide news releases in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 291,000 other distinguished young students who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Congratulations Nicole, Chris, Jordan and Alexander!

SM Students Chose Pope in Mock Conclave

Santa Margarita Catholic High School students got a taste of what it feels like to pick one of the most influential figures on the planet: the Pope.

As the Vatican prepared to start the conclave that'll select a new Pope, SMCHS organized a mock conclave to promote interest and understanding of the event.

"It will just increase their investment in the process," said religion teacher Samantha Stribling. "They're curious, too."

Santa Margarita sophomore Ryan Dugan said the mock meeting of the cardinals helped him understand the process.

"It allowed me to feel a part of it," he said. "I got to experience what it's all about."

Religion Department Chair Maria Johnson said she hopes the exercise will give students a greater appreciation for the church's rich history and tradition.

"The Church is so much bigger than what we might experience in our parishes and school," Johnson said.

Special Olympics Bring Smiles Across the Board

On Thursday, March 28th, Santa Margarita Catholic High School welcomed over 500 special needs athletes to the campus of SMCHS to compete in the 6th Annual Special Olympics, Track and Field. These special needs athletes came from several different southern California school districts including Brea, Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Capistrano Valley with competitors ranging in age from elementary school to adult transitional schools.

As a part of the campus ministry service project, more than 400 SMCHS sophomore's gathered at Santa Margarita Catholic High School to help set up the event and to buddy up with the special Olympics participants and to help guide, motivate, and encourage them along the way. The SM students decorated their respective tents in their visiting school's colors to welcome them to our school.

When the busses arrived on campus at 9:30am, the SM sophomore student body gathered to form a 'welcome tunnel' to cheer on every last competitor as they departed their bus and headed to their designated tents. As the athletes arrived at their tent, they were then buddied up with an SMCHS sophomore who was their personal coach for the day.

When the athletes settled in at their tents, they were then given their bib numbers and headed off to their designated events with the help of their SM sophomore buddy. The different events were the 25 meter dash, the 50 meter dash, and the softball toss.

At the completion of their events, every school representative and competitor was treated to a sack lunch at their tent while they cooled down and were able to share stories about how they did. When lunch was over, the athletes and their buddies then took to the makeshift dance floor which was led by campus ministry secretary Margie Diorio who served as the DJ. The kids were able to cut loose to some of their favorite songs while dancing and laughing the morning away.

When all was said and done, the athletes and their new buddies walked back to the bus together, shared hugs, and went home with a handful of stories and memories from the 6th Annual Special Olympics.

SMCHS and the Campus Ministry department would like to thank all of those who volunteered their time and energy to insure that the 6th Annual Special Olympics was a success and enjoyable for everyone.

On Saturday April 13th, SMCHS will host the Swim Special Olympics at the SMCHS Aquatic Center from 9:00am-noon.

Senior Pilgrimage- Class of 2013 Participates in Sacred Walk

Approximately 215 seniors participated in this prayerful event on Holy Thursday, March 28, walking from SMCHS to the Mission San Juan Capistrano.

The students made five significant stops at St. John's Episcopal School, RSM Middle School, Serra Catholic School, Las Flores Middle School and Mission Parish School where graduates of those schools presented faculty and staff of those schools a rose bush to thank them for their support.

The senior pilgrimage, an SM tradition, started in 2000. Each year on Holy Thursday, seniors walk from Santa Margarita Catholic High School to the San Juan Capistrano Basilica. Every step of this 13.7 mile is sacred as it is lifted to God in the name of a person or cause in need of prayers. The pilgrimage concludes with lunch and a prayer service.

Ice Hockey Captures League, State, and National Titles!

Congratulations to the Santa Margarita Ice Hockey team for claiming the USA Hockey National High School Championship Sunday, March 24th. The Eagles defeated the defending national champions, Regis Jesuit Raiders, 4-3 in overtime in Coral Springs, FL. Max Kilkuts was the hero of the day, scoring his second goal of the game off a scramble in front of the Regis Jesuit goal at 2:01 of the overtime period.

Before the Eagles could claim the National Championship, they had to pave the path through the league and state tournaments. The Eagles finished the ADHSHL season undefeated over a total of 16 games, including the playoffs. During this perfect season, The Eagles scored 97 goals while surrendering 15. Brian Desmond led the team in goals with 16. Jason Lively led the team in penalty minutes with 64.

In the National Championship game, the Eagles led Regis Jesuit after 1 period, 3-1 on goals by Tatu Hiltunen, Max Kilkuts and Brad Budman. The Eagles outshot Regis Jesuit 12-3, and had the better of the play throughout the period.

Regis Jesuit came back to tie the game at 3 after 2 periods of play with a very strong push. Shots in the second period were 15-10 in favor of Regis Jesuit.

The third period was hard fought by both teams, and scoreless. The Eagles killed a penalty with less than 3 minutes remaining in the period to preserve the tie and take the game to overtime. Santa Margarita outshot Regis Jesuit 9-5 in the period, and 31-18 for the game as it went to overtime.

That set the stage for Kilkuts' heroics and the Eagles 2013 National Championship win. The victory caps a tremendous season which included the hat trick of championships. Our Eagles now hold the ADHSHL Varsity 1A, California State and USA Hockey National Championships.

Congratulations to the coaches, players, and the Eagle family for a terrific season.
SMCHS Song Claims Undefeated Season, National Championship

The 2012-2013 Pep Squad had an unprecedented season of success.  The teams enjoyed cheering on our incredible Football and Basketball teams. From Arizona to the Anaheim Convention Center our sports teams had an amazing year.

Our Song Pom teams achieved new school records including an undefeated season in California for the Varsity Pom division.  The team also had many top finishes for their Jazz routine; bringing home a Grand Champion Title at the Golden State Spirit Association Southern California Dance Championships.  Our JV Song Pom team took home first place trophies from the Cheer Pros Best of the West and GSSA Championships.  Being part of the ESPN televised UDA Nationals was a highlight for the Varsity Song team.  School records were made with Pom and Jazz placing 6th and 9th against nearly 80 teams.  The season ended on a high note with the Varsity Song Pom team becoming the school's first song team to win USA Nationals!

Our Cheer teams also had a winning season with the Varsity team bringing home 1st place finishes for all regional events.  Titles were won at the CheerPros CA State Championships and the UCA West Coast Championships.  The JV Cheer team took home a 1st place trophy from the UCA West Coast Championships and finished the season 3rd at USA Nationals.  The Varsity Cheerleaders secured a finalist position at UCA Nationals in Orlando, Florida.  Their 9th place finish in the Nation advanced them into a new international category where they finished 8th against teams from around the Globe.  The season ended with a 6th place finish at USA Nationals held in Anaheim California this March.

Our Pep Squad has been blessed with many accomplishments and would like to acknowledge the tremendous effort of the athletes and coaches who work hard to maintain our strong tradition of success.  To our Alumni, your legacy continues to soar.

Kaitlyn Merritt Inches Closer to History, Literally

Sophomore Kaitlyn Merritt continues to solidify herself as one of the top girls' pole vaulters not only in the state, but in the nation. On March 23rd, Merritt improved on her state leading vault with a clearance of 13'06" in the pole vault, setting a new lifetime best in the process. The next closest girl in California is almost a foot lower than Merritt with 12'09", a respectable vault in itself. Kaitlyn now sits at #1 in California and #4 in the nation.

Merritt now sits tied for 3rd in CIF history with Chelsea Johnson (Atascadero, 2002), and is the number two vaulter in Southern Section history. Currently, she ranks as the number two sophomore in the event nationally (Shade Weygandt of Mansfield High, Texas 2007 13-7), and tied for 13th on the U.S. outdoor list for the history of the event. The next CIF mark to equal or pass, is the 13-8 vaulted by Morrow Bay High's Shayla Ballantyne (2001) and the CIF record is 14-1 by Castjella High's (Palo Alto) Tori Anthony at the 2007 CIF State Championships. The U.S. Prep Federation-National Scholastic girls record is 14-2 3/4 by Catholic High's (New Iberia, Louisiana) Morgan Leleux, in 2011.

Kaitlyn is vital to the girls track team success in more than just the pole vault, as she is a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays and has the ability to score in every sprint race in any given meet.
Water Polo Earns Player and Coach of the Year

Head Coach Kevin Ricks was named the 2012-2013 CIF-SS, Division II, Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to the CIF-SS Division II Championship, a Trinity League Championship and a 25-6 overall record. The overall record goes down as the second best all-time in Eagle's history. Coach Ricks has a career record of 188-145 as the head coach of the SMCHS Girls Water Polo Program.

Junior Haley Wan was selected the CIF-Southern Section, Division II, Player of the Year following her standout performance in the CIF Championship Game. Haley tallied five goals, 2 assists and 4 steals leading the Eagles to their second CIF Championship in girl's water polo.

Senior Emily Loughlin and junior Kacey Avalos were recognized on the All-CIF First Team. Emily's spectacular performance in the semifinal against El Toro HS where she scored the first four goals of the game sealed the Eagles' trip to the finals. Kacey Avalos is in many ways the unsung hero of the team. Kacey's consistent contributions at the defensive and offensive end were in many cases the difference in games. Kacey's passes are made with laser-like precision and she tallied a school record of 72 assists this season.

Senior Morgan Martinez and junior Kelli Baumgardner were selected to the All-CIF, Second Team. Morgan's performance in the Trinity League showdown between the Eagles and the Mater Dei Monarchs was impressive. She made five field blocks on the night denying several key opportunities to the Monarchs. Kelli Baumgardner had a breakout season for the Eagles and she steadily improved her play at both ends of the pool becoming a critical component of the team. She scored once in the CIF Championship Game while making two key assists in the victory.

Senior Jackie Villarreal was recognized on the All-CIF Division II, Honorable Mention list. Jackie is a tremendous talent whose physical defense and lightening shot allowed her to contribute throughout the season in all facets of the game. She will be attending San Diego State in the fall to continue her playing career.

Congrats to the Lady Eagles for their terrific season and individual accolades!

Arts Alliance

arts allianceArts Alliance is Recruiting Parent Volunteers.

We are looking for one parent to represent each discipline (Choral, Orchestral, Handbells, Theatre, Dance, Band) at the monthly Arts Alliance Meetings. Nurses Office

Our efforts to remind students of good hand washing and other flu-prevention recommendations has resulted in a relatively healthy winter season at SMCHS.  We would like to remind parents and students of the school policy for leaving school when ill.

Early Dismissal Due To Illness:

If a student feels that they are too ill to remain in school, he/she needs to go to the Nurse' s Office. After assessing the student, the nurse will notify the student's parent. If the parent is unavailable, the persons designated on the student's emergency card will be called. The nurse will issue the student a pass to go home, if necessary.  Students are not allowed to make arrangements to go home on their own. Leaving campus without a pass is truancy.

If your student needs to take prescription medication at school, please remember that a parent must bring the medication to school with a completed Medication Authorization Form signed by the prescribing doctor. Thank you for helping to keep our school safe and healthy!

Change Your E-Mail Address?

E-mail is the main avenue of communication that we have with our parents. If at any time your email address or other contact information changes during the school year, please email the school's Registrar Margie Mosman at mosmanm@smhs.org

You can also contact Nancy Hormuth in Campus Ministry at hormuthn@smhs.org to be added to the Eucharistic Adoration Group where you will receive additional information.

Grief Support Group

Every Wednesday at both lunches, the Grief Support Group gathers in the Campus Ministry Youth Center. Students experiencing loss of any kind are welcomed. They will find open hearts and arms to help support them during their difficult times. Students can bring a friend and their lunch. For further information contact Nancy Hormuth in Campus Ministry or Wende Borowski in Counseling.

Christian Service Opportunities

We are moving away from calculating performance of service based on hours to developing a service heart and civic skills through participation in class projects. These NEW changes will be explained in your student's religion class by their teacher and Ms. Dzida.

Of the many ways in which a high school student experiences the world, perhaps one of the most meaningful is through service. The stories of our faith tell us that we must serve one another if we desire to know God.
