Oxford, Alabama doing things right
In the space of a week in June, Oxford, Alabama had two new projects on the books:
One could look at this and say that economic development professionals had nothing to do with this--these projects would have happened anyway.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. If the local conditions had turned sour for either of these companies, they likely would have taken these expansions elsewhere.
The truth is, your job is never over. You must always be watching out for the local viewpoints and how they may affect the willingness of the businesses you have to stay put.
A great case study in this is what has happened to the pulp and paper industry in Maine over the last twenty years. More often than not (and for, admittedly, many reasons), the industry chose to leave the state en masse. Something to consider as you go about your job each day.
