How can you expand your services to influence developments in your area?
For a long time, Economic Development professionals have solicited the help of their local utilities, banks, lawyers and politicians to help "grease the skids" to make it attractive for an industry to move into their area. Further, they remain current on state and local opportunities for grants, aid, training and so forth.
Have you considered helping line up major financing? Should you go to the major national and international banks, present the case for your community, and get them on board with developments in your area? I am not talking about taking on the financial obligations of your prospects, but at least being in the position where you can introduce prospects to major financial players to whom you have pre-introduced your area and who are enthusiastic about businesses moving to your community. It is worth attempting.
It is also worth your time to talk to your environmental-permitting authorities and obtaining a preliminary view on what sorts of projects could be accepted in your area and which would have a difficult time.
The name of the game is do anything you can to gain advantage over your competition. It just may be time to step up your game.
