If your state's economic condition is healthy, use it to your advantage
The Financial Times recently published a report that some US states and cities are facing huge public pension liabilities that have gone unfunded for years. The day of reckoning is coming, just as it did for Detroit and San Bernardino.
If in a given competition, you can discern who your competitors are, this information can be used to your advantage, assuming that you are in a state or municipality that can prove you have shown and will show fiscal responsibility. After all, no one bringing a factory to your area wants to face the day when the place where their employees work and live goes through a Detroit-like experience.
You are competing for a deal today, but most likely the company thinking about coming to your area is looking at a twenty year or longer commitment. If you can demonstrably prove that your region is prepared to be fiscally responsible for the life of the asset, it should be most helpful to your bid.
