When is a "Letter of Intent" not?
I was reminded how difficult your jobs are recently when I saw an article reporting that a Chinese paper company that signed a letter of intent to develop a paper mill in Arkansas may actually be looking elsewhere. We ran the article in one of our publications (you can see it here).
This brought back memories of a deal I was involved in nearly thirty years ago, when I signed a similar letter of intent for my employer and we ultimately did not follow through on it.
For you, these examples mean that until you see those jobs show up, you cannot be certain your letter of intent is worth the paper on which it is written.
So, you can never rest until the grand opening. In other cases, even pre-letter of intent, I have seen economic development professionals rest on their laurels too soon and lose a project.
Stay in touch with your project developers all the time. I recommend weekly encounters, from the day they look your way until the day of the grand opening. Resting and relaxing can prove fatal. *****
