More obsolescence coming
Twenty year old prediction coming true
No one is following Verso any longer, because it has fallen off the charts and is now a penny stock, trading OTC. Bankruptcy seems to be inevitable.
It is fitting, however, that a new development on the horizon may show yet another path forward for some printing and writing grades. This is a path I predicted in a major conference over twenty years ago.
Epson has developed a machine that will recycle office paper in situ. It touts all the advantages I was talking about so long ago--a short recycle path being one of the main features. It also is virtually waterless. If this catches on, the shutdown of mills such as Courtland, Wickliffe and others is just getting started. You can read more about the Epson PaperLab here. Several years ago, a similar machine that would make toilet paper out of office paper was unveiled. We have not heard much about it lately, but it is very likely that the concept is not dead. Although the announcement was made nearly six years ago and we haven't seen much about it since, no doubt others are studying this first attempt and will perfect the machine sometime in the future. That machine was called White Goat. The point is this--nothing is ever safe, nothing lasts forever. The internet has shown this industry how true this statement is. It all makes your jobs tougher, as you now have to scour the universe to alert your customers and readers about the next big thing.
