Kitsap County Community Development will restore Friday hours for limited services

Beginning May 10, the Kitsap County Department of Community Development will be open to the public for limited services on Fridays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Services available include building permit submittal and issuance, Planner-of-the-Day (general inquiries), and building review questions and inspection coordination. The department is open for all normal services from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Read more

Jeff Reynolds, a senior vice president at Kitsap Bank, was instrumental in arranging an SBA loan for Rick Flaherty's company to begin manufacturing a new kind of LED replacement bulb for industrial lighting. A convergence of factors led to approval of a loan for a Kitsap County manufacturing company that had sought unsuccessfully for months to secure financing to start production of a breakthrough LED product it developed for industrial lighting uses. Navy contract saves Keyport engineering jobs

A three-year, $80 million follow-on Navy contract for BAE Systems is good news for 57 employees at the Navy's undersea warfare center in Keyport on the Kitsap Peninsula.
BAE, along with six local subcontractors, helps the Navy maintain the operational readiness of submarine torpedoes and other weapon systems at the center. Last fall, BAE systems engineers and technical staff at the center received 60-day lay-off notices as the earlier contract expired. Read more

New law will make employee training through state's community colleges more affordable for small businesses

OLYMPIA - A bill signed into law May 2 by Gov. Jay Inslee will make employee training more affordable for Washington small businesses.
SHB 1247, sponsored by state Rep. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island, makes it easier for small businesses to train employees in partnership with community and technical colleges by removing a dollar-for-dollar match formerly required under state law. Small businesses with less than $500,000 in annual gross business income are now only required to pay the usual salary and benefits during training. Read more
Tide, winds sorten cruise ship's stop in Poulsbo

The first cruise ship to visit Poulsbo had a few glitches on Friday, but passengers didn't seem to mind. ...The visit was supposed to last closer to four hours, but low tide and high winds forced a change in plans.
The 200-foot cruise ship had to anchor off Liberty Bay Marina on Fjord Drive near Oyster Plant Park, instead of off Waterfront Park as planned. A shuttle bus provided by Agate Pass Transportation was called at the last minute to take the passengers downtown. Read more
New name and home for CA$H, same mission for program

While the Washington CA$H program is no longer officially in Kitsap County, the program, which provides training for nascent entrepreneurs, continues to go strong. Now called BE$T - Business Education Support Training - the program is under the umbrella of Kitsap Community Resources and is providing the same type of hands-on education for small business owners. May 16, Technology group's May event will discuss smart energy grids and solar net metering
West Sound Technology Association will host a presentation May 16 on Changing Technology and Our Energy Grid: Smart Grids and Solar Net Metering.
The presentation by Puget Sound Energy representatives will focus on improved system reliability and customer energy management data and tools. It will explore the challenges of introducing and managing smart grid components, as well as the potential benefits to utilities and customers. The presentation by Laura Feinstein and Jake Wade of PSE also will include details about how grid-tied solar generation works.

These free training opportunities are offered by the Kitsap Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) and funded through the Washington Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) program which helps companies find and successfully achieve contracts for work with the local, state and federal governments. PTAC provides FREE and confidential business assistance and support to regional businesses in marketing and selling to federal, state and local government agencies and prime contractors. We also assist agencies, departments and primes in their efforts to comply with federal and state procurement diversity goals. KEDA's PTAC service area covers 5 counties: Kitsap, Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson and Mason.
