Social Media Misconduct
According to a recent workplace survey conducted by New York-based law firm Proskauer, social media is causing headaches for employers around the world. Human Resources Executive recently reported that 71% of the firms surveyed had to take disciplinary action against an employee due to social media misuse, up from 35% two years ago. What were the most prevalent types of social media misconduct? 81% of reports of social media misuse were due to improper sharing of confidential information, 71% of incidents were due to improper representation of business views, and 64% of social media misconduct reports included harassment of other employees.

But how can employers increase levels of satisfaction among their employees? Entrepreneur recently outlined six ways to foster more happiness in the workplace, noting the importance of leadership directly engaging employees in happy and uplifting behavior. Entrepreneur encourages leadership to embody optimism, celebrate successes, and eliminate negative influences quickly before it can ruin a team's cohesiveness.

Obama Targeting Pay Gap
Earlier this spring, President Obama signed an executive order prohibiting employers with federal contracts from retaliating against employees who discuss their compensation with other members of the organization. CNN reports that while the National Labor Relations Act already protects the right of employees to discuss their benefits and salary packages, this additional piece of legislation was signed in an effort to boost transparency in earnings and narrow the pay gap. While President Obama's executive order currently applies only those employers with federal contracts, the US Senate is scheduled to vote on legislation to extend this protection to all workers.

Asking Candidates How They Will Contribute to Your Firm's Bottom Line
Summer Dress Code Policies

As the trees and flowers bloom and become more robust, the clothing our employees wear to work seems to become less and more risqu. Before it becomes an issue, it is time to put a dress code in place for the summer. Many businesses establish a different set of rules for summer dress designed to allow employees to be a little more casual. Putting a policy out there that talks more about the don'ts and a bit about the dos will help avert a landslide of potential issues in the coming months.
