Vacation Vital to Success

Planning to work through your holiday vacation this year? The Society for Human Resource Management and the US Travel Association recently teamed up to survey HR professionals throughout the country to find out the importance of vacation and the impact of time off on employee performance, morale, retention, and overall productivity. 75% of those surveyed said that employees within their organization who use all or most of their PTO each year experience higher levels of job satisfaction, are higher performers, and are more productive than those who take fewer vacation days.

Fruitless Fridays?

Ever feel like you get nothing done on Fridays? You are not alone. Accountemps released their workplace productivity survey this week, with results indicating that Tuesday is the most productive day of the week for employees. Fox News reports that the specialized temporary staffing firm surveyed 300 HR managers at companies with 20 or more employees, and found that a staggering 39% say Tuesday is the most productive day of the week, with Thursday and Friday being tied as the least productive days for US workers. The study suggests that to be most efficient, employees should focus on getting big projects done early in the work week.

Proceed with Caution on Workplace Loans

With an alarmingly high 70% of employees reporting that they are living paycheck to paycheck, the prevalence of workplace loans is on the rise. Inc. recently reported that most small businesses will lend money to an employee at one time or another, and while research shows loans of this type can build bonds and increase loyalty between employees and business owners, employers must proceed with caution. Offering workplace loans to employees can expose a business to risks such as discrimination lawsuits, and can cause employees to enter a revolving cycle of debt.

Interview Question of the Week
Inclement Weather Policies

The official start of winter is not until this weekend, but December has proven to be a snowy month so far for much of the US. Employers need to take a look at what policies and practices they have in place for days when the weather impacts the ability for employees to get to work. Absences on days like these are driven more by school closures than they are by impassable roads. Having a policy on how said absences are to be dealt with in advance communicated to all management and staff is critical. Administering these policies equally and consistently is paramount. Is it a personal day? A sick day? A vacation day? A work from home day? This should be sorted out now.
