Say "Hello" to Ocho
the Therapy Dog!

We are very happy to welcome Ocho, a registered German Shepherd pet therapy dog, and his owner Mary Hickey to the Githens Center family. Ocho stops by to visit our Adult and After School programs every Thursday. Research has shown that interaction with trained therapy dogs has significant benefits to improve physical and mental health as well provide an opportunity to increase joint movement and motor skills.

Ocho is quickly becoming a best friend to all who meet him here at Githens Center!
A note to our friends and families:

From our beginning, Githens Center has endeavored to provide high-quality programs and services to help meet the physical, educational, therapeutic and social needs of individuals with disabilities and their families. As a private, non-profit organization, we provided our Education Program within the framework, guidelines and regulations set forth by the New Jersey Department of Education. Recent changes in educational philosophy within the state of New Jersey has resulted in more special needs students staying in district in public education, and so enrollment in many private special education schools in the state has gone down. When enrollment in a private special education school goes below a state-mandated threshold, the New Jersey Department of Education can step in and close that organization's education program, which it has done with Githens Center.

While we are saddened to have had our Education Program closed, we now have the opportunity to grow and expand our Adult Program at Githens Center ... and you'll be hearing more about that in the coming weeks and months!
