Being a Special Education Teacher
at Githens Center
by Lois Dwyer

I am very fortunate that I have known that I wanted to be a Special Education teacher since I was a teenager. I did a lot of volunteer work and tried out different careers (nurse, PT, teacher). I was pretty sure that I wanted to be an Elementary or Language Arts teacher. Along the way, I met someone who worked at a school for special needs kids and she asked me to come visit and consider volunteering there.

From the first week I was hooked! It was as if a light bulb went off and I knew that I had found my calling! I have never regretted my career choice or wanted to do anything else. I love teaching and working with special learners of all ages.

I love the challenge of getting to know each student and understanding how he or she learns best and what is going to spark their interest. This type of teaching is never boring and there is always more to learn. The nature of the work challenges me to be creative and come up with new things to try with the students.

I am very happy that Githens Center and I have found each other! It is a unique and caring place that reminds me of a family. The students and their needs are truly first here. They are not just a number, they are each their own special person who is respected and cared for and encouraged by staff members. I am very impressed with the quality and compassion of all the teachers, therapists and support staff at Githens.

All of the pieces fit and I feel like this is where I am supposed to be and what I am supposed to be doing.
