Who We Are and Why We Matter
(No, we don't publish the campus newspaper)

So, while everyone loves a good campus newspaper (and the crossword puzzle in it), university presses have a different purpose. If we ever do publish a crossword puzzle, we'll let you know--provided we can pull ourselves away from it long enough to get the word out.
How We Promote Our Titles to the Public

We attend many different exhibits throughout the year. At some exhibits we vet groundbreaking research for publication, while at other exhibits we showcase our publications in high demand in specific fields. We also promote our most
popular titles at trade exhibits because so many of them have high cross-market appeal. For a full list of upcoming exhibits: http://tamupress.com/pages/exhibits.aspx

Save Texas History! Symposium

We attended the General Land Office's annual symposium in San Antonio on 9.7.2013. FIVE of the seven preeminent scholars who spoke on Texas history were TAMU Press authors: Dr. Andrs Tijerina; Dr. Alywn Barr; COL Thomas T. "Ty" Smith (RET); Dr. Jess de la Teja; and Dr. Gilberto Hinojosa.

We were delighted to host some of these authors at our table. We sold out of many of their titles right away!

STAFF PICK of the Month by Thom Lemmons, Managing Editor

When it comes to books, I agree with the statement attributed to the late, great golfer Tony Lima, famous for enjoying a drop now and then. When asked what his favorite drink was, he supposedly said, "the next one." That's how it is with me and books: I'm always looking forward to the next one--especially in my capacity as

managing editor, since maintaining publication schedules means my focus tends to be more to the front than anywhere else.

That being said, I'd like to dip into the archives and point out one of my all-time favorites: Robert B. Shaw's Guide to Texas Grasses. Now, this is not a beach read; this hefty tome weighs in at 1,090-odd pages. So why would this be one of my favorite books?

Because I like to know what things are called. I love knowing that my yard contains not just "grass" but plants with cool names like Big bluestem (Andropgon gerardii) and Sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula, the Texas State Grass. (Did you even know we had a state grass?) Anything you would ever want or need to know about Texas grasses (and then some) is in this book. It feeds my curiosity and my enjoyment of knowing a little more about my surroundings. That's why it's one of my favorites.

I just wouldn't plan on carrying it with me to lunch.

Why Our Authors Are in Demand

The Maltby Brothers' Civil War

by Norman C. Delany

The Civil War is often referred to as a war of brothers, and the Maltby brothers are an exceptional example of this reality. Delaney's meticulous research relates a vibrant story of how war affects both family and community.

"The Maltby Brothers' Civil War makes an invaluable contribution to the history of South Texas and is highly elevated local history based on extensive primary sources. The lively style will be appreciated by the general audience, and the careful scholarship will appeal to historians with a special interest in nineteenth century Texas, antebellum Texas politics, early Texas newspapers, and the Civil War and Reconstruction."--COL Thomas Ty Smith (RET), author, The Old Army in Texas and The U.S. Army & the Texas Frontier Economy
