NEWS FROM THE GW CANCER CENTERGW-News
Client reminders and recalls are evidence-based interventions to improve vaccination rates in children, adolescents and adults in a range of settings and populations. Implementing immunization Information Systems (IIS) in health systems is key to preventing human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers.

What is IIS and how can comprehensive cancer control (CCC) professionals and Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) support its implementation and use in health care systems to increase HPV vaccination uptake?

This National Immunization Awareness Month, the GW Cancer Center and the National Area Health Education Center Organization (NAO) are pleased to host a webinar featuring speakers from the American Immunization Registry Association, who will give an overview of IIS, and the North Dakota Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, who will provide insight into its real-world application. Hawaii Skin Cancer Coalition
Since 1995, the Hawaii Skin Cancer Coalition (HSCC) has spearheaded the effort to educate healthcare professionals and the public in Hawai`i about the prevention, early detection, and treatment of skin cancer. HSCC was originally founded by volunteers from the American Cancer Society, Hawai`i Department of Health, and the Cancer Center of Hawai`i's Cancer Information Services of Hawai`i, but has since expanded to include volunteers from over 20 public, private, and non-profit partner agencies. HSCC promotes sun protection education in Hawai`i in a manner mindful of the rich cultural diversity in the state and with a focus on community access. Since 1997, HSCC has coordinated several annual free skin cancer screenings at public venues and events frequented by residents and tourists. On average, 44 percent of the 130 individuals screened each year during these events were found to have a serious skin condition. Between 2010 and 2013, 587 skin conditions were identified and followed to ensure receipt of appropriate care.
