Hawaii Skin Cancer Coalition
Since 1995, the Hawaii Skin Cancer Coalition (HSCC) has spearheaded the effort to educate healthcare professionals and the public in Hawai`i about the prevention, early detection, and treatment of skin cancer. HSCC was originally founded by volunteers from the American Cancer Society, Hawai`i Department of Health, and the Cancer Center of Hawai`i's Cancer Information Services of Hawai`i, but has since expanded to include volunteers from over 20 public, private, and non-profit partner agencies. HSCC promotes sun protection education in Hawai`i in a manner mindful of the rich cultural diversity in the state and with a focus on community access. Since 1997, HSCC has coordinated several annual free skin cancer screenings at public venues and events frequented by residents and tourists. On average, 44 percent of the 130 individuals screened each year during these events were found to have a serious skin condition. Between 2010 and 2013, 587 skin conditions were identified and followed to ensure receipt of appropriate care.
