Despite advances in awareness and prevention, human papillomavirus (HPV) remains a major public health threat. We know that a strong health care provider recommendation continues to be the single most important factor in whether parents choose to vaccinate their children. Yet, many providers report not strongly recommending the vaccine and many parents report receiving little or no information about it from their child's provider. This webinar is intended to provide area health education centers, public health professionals and community-based organizations with the tools to successfully reach health care providers via social media as a strategy to improve the quality of provider HPV vaccine recommendation. Staff from the GW Cancer Institute including Director Mandi Pratt-Chapman and Research Assistant Kanako Kashima, along with colleagues from the Milken Institute School of Public Health, recently authored an article on "The Effect of Changes in Health Beliefs Among African-American and Rural White Church Congregants Enrolled in an Obesity Intervention: A Qualitative Evaluation" in the Journal of Community Health. Cancer Control Spotlight:
Kentucky
Thirty-two cancer, chronic disease and community stakeholders convened in April 2015 in Morehead, Kentucky for the first of three annual Northeast Kentucky Regional Community Roundtables to create action plans to lower tobacco-related diseases. At the 6-month follow-up call in October, roundtable members reported encouraging progress, including compilation and integration of community resources in electronic medical records, identification of effective messages to promote lung cancer screening and piloting of a telemedicine program to train and certify tobacco cessation specialists. A report on the roundtable is forthcoming.
