NSSRA Annual Meeting on Jan. 30, 2014

Please join us at the NSSRA Annual Meeting, which will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, the first day of the SIA Snow Show in Denver, in the Colorado Convention Center. The exact location of the meeting will be announced. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. Please enter the date and time in your planner or smartphone and be part of the dialogue on the issues important to your success in the snowsports industry. If you are unable to attend the Annual Meeting, stop by NSSRA's booth. We'll announce that location shortly.

Important Notice: Your Membership ID Number Has Changed

Effective immediately, you will have a new NSSRA membership ID number, which is listed above. This new number applies to both NSSRA and NSGA. We have updated our member database software and that is the reason for the change in your ID number. With the username "NSGA" and your ID number you will continue to have the same access to members-only services and areas of the NSGA website. If you have any problems or questions, please contact NSSRA President Larry Weindruch, lweindruch@nssra.com or phone (888) 257-1168.

Inventory Management Webinars Available on NSGA Website

Online education is a new member benefit that a number of NSSRA members have requested. If you have employees who may be interested in learning more about inventory management or if you could use a refresher yourself, there is a two-part webinar series on the subject posted on the NSGA website, www.nsga.org.

NSGA recently recorded two webinars, led by retailing expert, author and speaker Tom Shay, who was actively involved in his family's retail business for many years. Both webinars are now available to you and your employees AT NO COST TO YOU. Non-members would pay $295 for the two-webinar package. To access them, please visit the Learning Center, and log in with your NSGA Member ID.

Please remember to use your new Membership ID number which is at the top of this newsletter.

NSGA Can Help Your Employees with College Expenses

Since all NSSRA members have full benefits of NSGA membership through the master membership program, we thought you'd be interested in this exciting program.

Many of you have students working either full- or part-time. The NSGA Scholarship Program offers financial aid to current and former employees of NSSRA-member retailers and dealers. High school seniors and college student employees or former employees are eligible to apply for $1,000 scholarships to be awarded in 2014!

Applications are being accepted now through Jan. 17, 2014. For more information and application materials, go to www.nsga.org/collegescholarship.

A Note About the 2013-14 Combined Indemnified Bindings List

The list for this season was sent via email to all NSSRA members in good standing in September. If you have not renewed your membership for 2013-14, please do so now, and we will email the list to you. Non-renewing members will be terminated this month.

SSL Will Relocate to Denver

The Board of Directors of Sports Specialists Ltd. (SSL), at its most recent meeting, approved the relocation of the headquarters of the company from Victor, N.Y. to Denver next Summer.

The decision to move the company to Colorado was based primarily on the desire to locate the company as close as possible to the center of the snowsports industry. The changing needs of the consumer, coupled with the rapidly evolving retail landscape, requires the company to be better positioned to serve the needs of its growing number of new specialty snowsports retail members, both city and resort stores.

Chairman of SSL, Mark Williams of Williams Ski & Patio in Highland Park, Ill., states "moving the company to Denver puts us closer to the key activities associated with the snow sports business, i.e. the Winter Sports Market and SIA Snow Show, plus the post show national demo, major rep shows and other industry organizations. The Board is excited about the opportunities this move will have to strengthen all aspects of SSL's operations and position us for strong future growth."

Secretary of SSL, Brad Nelson, owner of Hi Tempo Ski & Sail in White Bear Lake, Minn. and also Chairman of NSSRA, states "retail in general -- and snowsports retail in particular -- is going through tremendous changes. With change comes opportunity, and this move will allow SSL to offer its members access to new resources and support needed to help them thrive and grow in  today's ultra-competitive marketplace."

President and CEO of SSL, Steve Rogers, states "I am super excited about the relocation of the company from Victor, N.Y. to Denver! The Front Range of Colorado is where many industry organizations are already located...NSAA and OIA to mention just a couple. In addition to the many benefits to the company and our members, the new location will be more conveniently accessible to our supplier partners whose relationship to SSL is vital to our retailers' long term success. I believe by moving to Colorado, the SSL Board of Directors is making a huge statement on importance of positioning the company to have the most impact on the success of our members' businesses in the future. I look forward to being a part of this new direction. Go Broncos!"

LSSM Asking for January/Bring-A-Friend Offers from Retailers

Learn To Ski & Snowboard Month (LSSM) -- of which NSSRA is a co-sponsor -- wants to know what you are doing to promote your store in January for LSSM and Bring a Friend. This information is passed along to LSSM's PR agency for pitching to the consumer media and for use in press releases that are being posted on skiandsnowboardmonth.org. The press release section gets a lot of traffic. Please send offer info to LSSM's Mary Jo Tarallo at lifes2shortmjt@gmail.com.

The Bring-A-Friend Challenge starts Dec. 1 and ends March 14. LSSM is not asking you to do anything but help promote it. It's all online. You can use the Challenge in your own promotional efforts. This is an ideal program for retailers who have a loyal customer base.

The Challenge offers current skiers and snowboarders a chance to win the prizes if they help at least one newcomer sign up for lessons from professional instructors. They simply need to sign up for the Challenge at skiandsnowboardmonth.org.

Anyone who helps at least three newcomers sign up for lessons (several did last year) can qualify to be an Ambassador (ages 18 and over) or a Champion (ages 13-17) by following the criteria posted on skiandsnowboardmonth.org in the News and Info section. They also qualify for the prizes by entering the Challenge.

At the end of the Challenge an Ambassador and Champion of the year will be selected. Each will receive a pair of skis from HEAD or a snowboard set up from Flow, a jacket from The North Face, and a season pass to a selected venue. The Ambassador of the year will win a four-day trip to Utah.

SIA Research: Getting Kids on Snow Will Get the Family into the Shop

SIA has released the 2013 Youth Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report a supplement to the full Market Intelligence Report. Today's kids like a little bit of everything, and that's something that retailers and brands are working to understand to better suit them. If we can figure out how to get kids interested, we will get the whole family involved and to our retail shops. Youth sales brought in $306 million or roughly 9% of total snow sports sales in 2012/2013.

Select Highlights from 2012-2013:

  • More than 4.4 million kids between ages 6 and 17 participated in snow sports during the 2012-2013 season.
  • Fifty-seven percent of all youth snow sports purchases were made at specialty shops.
  • Twenty-five percent of alpine skiers are under 17.
  • Snowboarding was the most popular snow sport among kids in 2012/2013, bringing more than 2.1 million kids to the mountain.

The 2013 Youth Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report is available at no cost to SIA Members and $425 to non-members. If you haven't already seen them, make sure to check out this year's full SIA Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report and Women's Market Intelligence Report. To receive a copy of this year's report or for more information about snow sports retail sales information and other SIA research products including the State of the Industry Videos, Snow Sports Participation Study, Revisiting Growing the Snow Sports Industry and more, contact Kelly Davis, SIA's Director of Research, at KDavis@snowsports.org or by phone at (703) 506-4224.
