2012 SMHS Commencement Weekend

Jeffrey S. Akman, M.D. '81, interim vice president for health affairs and dean of SMHS, welcomed the 175 graduates for the Class of 2012 during the University's commencement celebration May 18-20. Class valedictorian Meghan Elizabeth Bishop introduced the keynote speaker, Congresswoman Donna Christensen, M.D. '70. Christensen delivered a motivational speech about the realities of the world of medicine and the challenges graduates face as they begin their journey as doctors.

For high school students, making the decision about how to spend the summer months can be difficult. But for the girls who attended SMHS's Genomic Opportunities for Girls In Research Labs (GO GIRL) summer program June 11-14, the choice was easy.  

 

 

Master Teacher Leadership Development

GW's Master Teacher Leadership Development Program celebrated its 10th cohort of faculty members to complete the program. Designed to enhance teaching skills, foster scholarship in education, and develop educational leadership potential, the program is creating a cadre of health education experts who are building upon the School of Medicine and Health Sciences' reputation for exceptional education.

Nobel Laureate Advises High School Students

How often does one get a chance to hear life lessons from a Nobel laureate? Not very. So when top science and math high school students from the D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, they said yes to the man who unlocked the riddles of NO (nitric oxide). In a May 18 lecture, Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., university professor and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at SMHS shared nuggets of wisdom from his prolific career in medicine and science.
