Spring Forward with the
Alzheimer's Care Resource Center

Hello Spring! With the weather finally taking a turn for the better, it's time to get outside and enjoy the warm sunshine. If you're a caregiver to an aging parent or loved one, check out these great springtime activities that will bring happiness to the person you care for.

Together, you could check out a local farmer's market. It's a perfect outdoor activity for seniors. They're usually open early in the morning so the hot afternoon sun can be avoided and there's an abundance of fresh produce for your loved one to choose, pick-out and take home which adds to their sense of independence. If you go to the farmer's market often enough, then this outing can quickly turn into a social event as well.

Another idea is to have a picnic at the park. What brings a family together more than sharing a meal? Welcome the Spring season with a fun family picnic enjoyed in your favorite local park. Don't forget to invite the grandchildren and other little kids. Their child-like energy is therapeutic to aging loved ones and they just love to watch the little ones play.

If all that sounds like too much for your loved one, then consider staying at home to plant something in the garden. Spring is the perfect time to start new life. For loved ones who aren't able to get down on their hands and knees, planting flowers in a hanging basket can be a great alternative. Studies show that older adults who care for things like plants or pets have a higher sense of confidence and self-esteem and watching a plant grow from just a sprout can be very rewarding to your loved one.

This season, let's vow to get outside more, to spend quality time with friends and family and to embrace the natural beauty of this Spring season!

Let your joy burst forth like flowers in the spring.

With warmest regards,

Tips to Reduce Your Allergic Reactions This Season
Spring has finally sprung, but unfortunately, it comes with allergy season. Experts believe this year will be a particular high pollen-count year and recommend that everyone be prepared for a potentially rough allergy season.
In an effort to reduce your allergy symptoms, you can follow these steps so you can have a fun and happy spring season:

1. Avoid High Pollen Hours
The pollen count is usually highest between 5:00am and 10:00am. If you or your loved one is especially sensitive to allergies during this season you should try to stay indoors during this time to help alleviate some of the symptoms.

2. Remove Shoes Before Coming Indoors
Remove your shoes before going indoors to avoid bringing pollen into the house. If you don't want to leave your shoes outside, than try entering through a door that has an entry way away from the rest of the house.

3. Clean Up After Being Outside
It's hard to avoid the beautiful weather that comes in the spring season. If you spend a good amount of time outdoors than be sure to clean up when you enter the house. Take a shower or at the least wash your hands and face. Removing pollen from your body and clothes will help to reduce your allergy symptoms.

4. Be Prepared
Sometime this week or in the upcoming weeks, stock up on all necessary allergy medicines just in case your allergies flare up. This includes any prescriptions as well as any over-the-counter medications.

In the United States, it's estimated that about 10% to 30%
of adults are affected by allergies.
