Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month

The Alzheimer's Association is moving our awareness month from September to June. This new month will be called Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month (ABAM).- a time to shine a purple light for the millions of individuals world-wide and all the family members and caregivers locally affected by Alzheimer's disease. We need your help to honor those struggling with this disease every day by mobilizing friends, families, neighbors, co-workers and customers to help bring an end to Alzheimer's disease. The time is now to commit to going purple during Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month.

Father Day 2014

What could be better than getting a present on a special day? Mother's day or Father's day: These and many more occasions offer an excuse or a reason to give a gift to that loved one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia.

We recommend that you consider two important things when selecting a gift for a person with Alzheimer's disease. Choose something that will make things easier for him, things that will help maintain a degree of independence. The collective name for this type of product is Aids for Daily Living. This could be a product that helps her to remember to take his medicine or to accomplish an everyday task that the progression of the disease is making more difficult. It could be an item that helps him locate something when he forgets where he used it last.

Another important consideration: find something that is fun, something that he will really enjoy. Best Alzheimer's Products have spent countless hours finding activities that are delightful at the same time that they are engaging and stimulating. That could be sensory stimulation, cognitive stimulation, or physical stimulation. If an activity stimulates it will probably be fun.

It is also important to consider the stage he or she is in when selecting a present for a person with Alzheimer's. In the earliest stages, gifts need not be different than what you might have given her before the diagnosis. Games and activities should reflect her interests and challenge her to exercise her brain as well as her body. As the condition progresses activities should be less challenging, but should still reflect her interests and keep her involved. Later stage gifts should concentrate on providing comfort while stimulating the senses.

Summer Safety Tips

Summer provides wonderful opportunities for families to create meaningful moments with loved ones diagnosed with dementia.  Enjoying gardens, family cookouts, or holiday celebrations are fantastic ways to reminisce with your loved one.

There are a few safety tips to remember:

  1. Be sure to use sun block. As a person ages, their skin becomes thinner and will burn more easily. Also, many medications can cause a person to burn more easily the longer they are in the sun.
  2. Provide plenty of beverages. Dehydration can be a serious issue for aging seniors.  Someone with dementia may not realize they are thirsty or overheating.
  3. Sit under a shaded area. This will also help prevent sunburn or over exposure to the sun.
  4. Avoid areas where the side walk is uneven or has broken concrete. A person with an unsteady gait may be more likely to fall if the pavement is not smooth.
  5. Utilize courtyards or fenced in yards to avoid wandering. Wandering can become a serious problem in the heat of summer.

Remember, spending time outdoors is an important part of an aging persons daily routine.  Practicing good safety tips will ensure that everyone has a great time without stress.
