Dock Becomes Largest Tsunami Debris to Arrive from Japan
In case you missed the news reports take a look at this video and article about the nearly 70-foot-long dock that floated onto an Oregon beach after being torn loose from a fishing port in Japan after the tsunami.

And Man created the plastic bag and the tin and aluminum can and the cellophane wrapper and the paper plate, and this was good because Man could then take his automobile and buy all his food in one place and He could save that which was good to eat in the refrigerator and throw away that which had no further use.  And soon the earth was covered with plastic bags and aluminum cans and paper plates and disposable bottles and there was nowhere to sit down or walk, and Man shook his head and cried:  "Look at this Godawful mess."  ~Art Buchwald, 1970

International Coastal Cleanup
This September marks the 27th Anniversary of the International Coastal Cleanup, and Clean Coast is proud to once again participate during our September 22 cleanup on Wassaw Island. It's really no differentt from one of our regular monthly cleanups except that volunteers will record data in addition to picking up trash. The Ocean Conservancy receives data from nearly 150 countries and compiles an annual report which helps paint a picture of the quantity and characteristics of the man-made marine debris floating in the ocean and washing up on shorelines worldwide.  Click here to see last year's numbers.

This cleanup is also a Georgia Rivers Alive event.  Hundreds of sites across the state will be cleaned up by volunteers and the data they collect will also go to the Ocean Conservancy. The City of Savannah will hold an event at Hayner's Creek on October 27 and on October 15 the Savannah Riverkeeper is hosting a cleanup starting at the Presidents Street boat ramp.  Visit the Rivers Alive website to locate more cleanup sites in Georgia.
Marine Debris Tracker
It's actually no longer true that we reserve data collection activities for our September cleanup. In March we started using a smart phone app designed at the UGA College of Engineering called Marine Debris Tracker.  We've submitted data at nearly every cleanup since, and plan to make this an integral part of every cleanup from now on.  If you have a smart phone and would like to help submit data please drop us an email.

Our data collection so far has not been complete. For example, in March we were overwhelmed by the huge volume of trash removed from the Savannah River and could record only a small sample of what was found, and we didn't have time during the July cleanup because of concerns over an approaching storm.  Still, you might find it interesting to download and review the Excel spreadsheet which lists what we did record.

Johnson Controls Donates $1,000 to Clean Coast
Johnson Controls, a Fortune 500 company with over 162,000 employees around the world is a leading provider of equipment, controls and services for heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration and security systems serving customers in over 150 countries,  As part of a volunteer initiative dubbed Blue Sky Involve, the company donated $1,000 to Clean Coast.and about 20 employees drove down from Charleston, SC to participate in the August cleanup on Ossabaw Island.
Ocean Film Festival
September 20 is opening night for the 2012 Gray's Reef Ocean Film Festival.  The four day free festival will showcase remarkable films like Turtle: The Incredible Journey, lectures by prominent film-makers like Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and an exhibit of award-winning underwater photographs of Gray's Reef taken by Sanctuary Assistant Superintendent, Greg McFall.  Visit the Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary website for a complete schedule.

Roundup of Summer 2012 Achievements
It's been a busy and productive summer.

In addition to completing all the monthly cleanups on our schedule we helped organize a kayak cleanup with Savannah Canoe and Kayak on Little Tybee Island, helped a youth group from Christ Church conduct a cleanup on the Savannah River, helped Keep Liberty County Beautiful conduct a cleanup on St. Catherine's Island and started a hands-on marine debris lesson for youth groups at Fort Pulaski National Monument.

The Heard Elementary School Beta Club was the first group to participate in the Fort Pulaski Marine Debris Initiative and we are looking forward to working with other groups very soon. Children who participate will view a PowerPoint presentation about marine debris, conduct a cleanup at Fort Pulaski and record data using the Marine Debris Tracker smart phone app.
