River Flows Will Stay Low This Summer
Despite above-average snowpack in Island Park this spring, gradual snowmelt and the lingering effects of the 2012-2013 drought have combined to keep flows in the Henry's Fork downstream of Island Park Dam well below average for this time of year. Under current conditions, we anticipate outflow from Island Park Dam remaining at around 450 cubic feet per second (cfs) until late June, compared to the long-term average of 1,110 cfs and last year's June flow of around 700 cfs. Much of this year's snowpack soaked into the ground, recharging soil moisture and aquifers instead of filling streams and reservoirs. Wild trout in the Henry's Fork will reap the benefit of this recharge next winter, when it helps maintain higher streamflows. Essentially, we are trading a few weeks of sub-optimal fishing conditions now for increased trout survival next winter. The other good news is that flow during the mid-summer irrigation season is forecast to be much lower than last year. We anticipate that flow out of Island Park Dam will gradually increase to around 1,000 cfs by early July, slightly below the long-term average of 1,200 cfs and substantially lower than the 1,600 cfs we experienced last year.
