Reservoir Levels Mean Good Streamflows for Angling This Summer
We expect streamflows this summer in the Henry's Fork to be optimal for fishing--not too high and not too low. Periods of showers and cool weather continue to contribute to an ever-improving water outlook. Despite above-average snowpack and continued precipitation, reservoir storage is still below average for this time of year, due to the effects of back-to-back dry years in 2012 and 2013. As of May 11, the upper Snake Reservoir system was 64 percent full, compared to an average of 75 percent. If current trends continue, we expect Island Park Reservoir to fill by the end of May and Henry's Lake to fill by mid-June. But unlike last year, we anticipate that all of the water in these reservoirs will belong to local irrigators. This means that there will be no need to deliver large amounts of water through the Henry's Fork to lower-valley irrigators this summer, boding well for angling.

Buffalo River Wild Trout Migration Peaks
The robust migration of wild trout into and out of the Buffalo River this year emphasizes the important contribution of this large tributary to the Henry's Fork fishery. After a slow start, the spring spawning migration of wild rainbow trout into the Buffalo River picked up substantially in the past few weeks.
As of May 9, the fish ladder passed 83 spawning-sized rainbow trout. We anticipate this year's spawning run to total about 120 wild trout by the end of June. Meanwhile, around 20,000 young rainbow trout have moved downstream from the Buffalo River and into the Henry's Fork, with more than 99 percent of these wild trout born in the tributary.

Join Mike Lawson of Henry's Fork Anglers for a fishing trip to Pesca Maya Lodge in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve provided by Yellow Dog Fly Fishing. For more seasoned anglers, this is one of the world's best locations to target permit on a fly. With hundreds of square miles of flats, it is not uncommon to see bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and barracuda all in the same day. When: November 29 - December 6, 2014 Cost: $3,000/person (save $750 off retail!) $500 will be donated to the Foundation for each participant. Two spots also remain on a hosted fishing trip to Rio Manso, Patagonia in January 2015. Learn more>>
