Trout Migration in Full Swing

Spring trout migration season is underway in the Buffalo River, the largest tributary to the Henry's Fork. Young trout are migrating downstream into the Henry's Fork and adult trout are migrating upstream to spawn in the Buffalo River. As of April 15, the fish ladder has passed 26 spawning-sized rainbow trout upstream, including the one below measuring 24 inches. Join us on Facebook to see photos.

The spawning run usually peaks in mid-May so we expect to see many more wild rainbow trout in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, several thousand juvenile rainbow trout have moved out of the Buffalo River and into the Henry's Fork, highlighting the importance of the Buffalo River to the Henry's Fork fishery.

Water Outlook Continues to Improve

Thanks to numerous wet storms during February and March, the amount of water in the snowpack is above average throughout the upper Snake River basin, including the Henry's Fork and Teton watersheds. In addition, cool weather in the mountains has kept the snow on the ground, and showers in the valleys have limited demand for irrigation water so far this spring. This bodes well for reservoir levels and stream flows, as well as angling throughout the summer.
