Trout Population Highest in Decades
Rainbow trout in the Box Canyon reach of the Henry's Fork are more abundant this spring than in any year since the 1970s. Based on sampling conducted in mid-May, Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) biologists estimate the population at just under 6,200 fish per mile.

That is over 17,000 fish in the 2.8-mile Box Canyon reach, about twice the number present in May of 2012 and more than twice the average population size over the last 20 years.

The last time trout were this abundant was in 1978, when the population size was just over 18,000 fish. The increase in trout abundance this year was driven by a very large number of fish hatched in 2011, which benefited from good river flow conditions below Island Park Dam during the 2011-2012 winter. HFF advocates for higher river flows during critical winter months to improve the survival of trout in their first year.

Join Us for Henry's Fork Days

Join us to celebrate and support the conservation of the Henry's Fork. This year's 2-day event features a breakfast on the river Friday, June 14 from 8:00-9:30 a.m. After that, find out what HFF has been up to this last year at the member meeting from 9:30-11:00 a.m.

Saturday's festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. with a reception, live auction, and a casting demo by Bob Jacklin. Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. and is followed by a live auction featuring some amazing fishing trips, fine art, and fishing gear. The evening ends with a drift boat raffle drawing (see above left). The dinner and auction often sell out so don't wait to get your tickets at the door!
