EScrip, BoxTops and Soup Labels -- OH MY!

With all of the action of a new school year, don't forget a few of the small fundraisers that continue to help at TRCS:

  • Box Tops for Education & Campbells Soup Labels... please clip and collect those little rectangular things.  We get hundreds of dollars from them each year!  They can be turned in at the school front desk.  A couple of times a year we do "box tops and soup label drives."
  • eScrip:  You can register your Safeway cards at www.escrip.com and help TRCS earn extra funds!

A Season of Change

By now, you may have heard that plans for high school location have been changed.  Because the fire marshal requires a ceiling sprinkler system in all newly located schools, and because the construction style of Calvary would require us to tear out most ceilings completely, the move to Calvary Community will not happen.  (It would require a $250,000 - $300,000 renovation that cannot be done before September.)

However, in the midst of that discover, New Life Fellowship (2441 42nd Ave.) has offered to take us in at our current lease rate.  What a blessing!  They have many unused classrooms (as well as a modern, approved sprinkling system).  Plans are being made to get us up and running by September 2nd.  Locker rooms and gymnasium changes need to occur but should be able to be completed in the time we have.  Please keep praying that the city, fire and health departments are able to give all of the necessary permits for us to finally get settled.

TRCS is definitely going through a major transition:  we're moving a main campus branch after 19 years in the same location, we're celebrating our 50th anniversary, we're launching a 1:1 technology initiative for the high school, and we're welcoming many new staff members (see article below).

In the midst of all this, we're counting the blessings of a community that has been coming around us in support.  Not only have we exceeded our fundraising goal, but we've been so grateful for the churches who have told us that our school matters, and that they would love to help us.  (THANK YOU to Calvary Community Church, Valley Christian Fellowship, New Life Fellowship, First Christian Church, Longview Nazarene, Columbia Heights Christian Academy, Seventh Day Adventist, Kelso Christian Assembly and others who have expressed support.)

Obviously, we still have a lot of work to do -- but our community is worth it, and your children are worth it!

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the LORD, not for human masters."  - Col. 3:23

Keep watching your email for announcements through this transition, and please keep praying for God's blessing on our school.  If you have any thoughts or questions, please don't hesitate to email or call!

Elementary Staff Announcements for Fall 2015

With all of the transition happening, we understand that many of you have been wondering who will be teaching what at the K-7 campus this fall.  Here's our proposed staff roster for Fall, as well as some biographical information from our new teachers.  (Please note, this roster may change as enrollment grows.  While we're currently listing two blended classes, this is dependent on enrollment and we may hire an additional teacher to separate classes.  The blended classrooms will have independent curriculum taught separately. Having a second Kindergarten class is also dependent on enrollment numbers.)

Kindergarten (Class One):  Mrs. Lisa Hammond
Kindergarten (Class Two - depending on enrollment):  Mrs. Jessica Carroll
First Grade:  Miss Celeste Woodman
Second Grade:  Miss Shelly Backstrom
Third Grade:  Mrs. Hayley Takko
Fourth/Fifth Blended:  Mrs. Deb Vegh
Sixth Seventh Blended:  Mr. Joshua Wenzek
STRIVE program, Media/Technology and blended class help:  Mrs. Jeanne Nortness
K-12 Counselor:  Maija Nordstrom (Miss Nordstrom will spend one day per week at the elementary campus)

Here's some more info on some of our new staff members:

Mrs. Hayley Takko
"My name is Mrs. Hayley Takko. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Education with an elementary teaching certificate from Washington State University. I started teaching 3rd grade in the Kelso School District shortly after graduation. After the births of my two daughters, time as a stay-at-home mom, and a wonderful experience as a preschool teacher at Calvary Community, I feel God's call to return to the elementary classroom. My experience with TRCS began when I attended the school as a young girl (then known as Longview Christian School). I was excited to become part of the family here again when I enrolled my daughter. Now I feel honored to become part of the team and witness first-hand all the awesome things that God is doing here at TRCS." You can email Mrs. Takko a welcome at htakko@3riversschool.net.

Mr. Joshua Wenzek

Mr. Wenzek has enjoyed teaching junior high students at Makua Lani Christian Academy in Kailua Kona, Hawaii for the past two years. While there he taught students Bible, science, math, language arts, gardening, drama and violin. He enjoys helping students observe creation and love the Lord with all their minds. He strives to abide in the center of God's will and has served on mission trips to Mexico, Ukraine, Guatemala, and Zambia. Mr. Wenzek holds his Bachelor's degree in secondary education with endorsements in biology and middle level science from Northwest University. He also has his Washington State teaching credentials. He enjoys hiking, gardening, travelling, cooking and worshiping his creator. His wife Ali, son Genesis and he look forward to plugging into the Longview and TRCS community!  You can email Mr. Wenzek a welcome at jwenzek@3riversschool.net.

Miss Maija Nordstrom

Maija Nordstrom graduated from Cornerstone Community Christian School (now Three Rivers Christian School) in 2001. She completed her BA in Bible/Theology, Educational Ministries and Hebrew minor from Multnomah University in 2005 and her MAT with teaching licensure from Concordia University in 2007. She has enjoyed working with children, youth, and families in our community as an Early Intervention Teacher at Progress Center, as a Youth Ministry teacher, event coordinator, and camp counselor, as a substitute teacher in local districts, and currently as the Director of Children's and Women's Ministries at The Bridge Church of Longview. She enjoys playing piano, reading, running and spending time with family and friends in her free time. Maija is pleased to join the wonderful staff of Three Rivers Christian School as Guidance Counselor!  You can email Miss Nordstrom a welcome at mnordstrom@3riversschool.net.

More staffing announcements will follow this summer!  Keep checking your email...
