We hear a lot in business about the need for leaders to have emotional intelligence (EI). What does that mean? What is EI and how does having "it" make a difference?

Emotional intelligence is the set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we:

Many of my clients, faced with an aging workforce, fewer employees entering the workforce and multiple generational cohorts, are talking about succession and succession planning. Who will take over the reins of leadership when the Baby Boomers leave the workforce?

In the past ten years, workforce dynamics have changed significantly and new leadership is required. As a result, two key questions emerge:

Leadership: The Power of Influence
Greetings!

In today's competitive environment, leaders don't win alone. They rely on teams who support them and help them win. One could say that the leader uses his or her "power" to make their teams do what they do. That sounds negative and manipulative, and in a recent discussion with senior leaders, they told me as much. However, the term "power" is not inherently positive or negative; we give the word the connotation.

So then, what is "power?" ...

Positivity For Performance
Do people with a positive attitude perform better at work? Anecdotally, it would seem that people who have higher levels of positivity have greater job satisfaction and, as a result, perform better. Research actually supports this.

Happy employees, in general, are three times more creative than unhappy employees, have higher levels of productivity (31%), and have 35% higher sales (Lyubomirsky, King and Diener , 2005). However, it can be difficult to maintain a positive attitude , given the stress of high performance cultures where there is more than enough work to go around. Creating happy employees is not necessarily the goal of organization; it is making a profit, pleasing shareholders; and ensuring that the quarterly results are good. To consciously create an environment where people are happy? That's not usually the intent.

What Can We Learn From Haida Strategy?
Watchmen - Haida Strategy

Recently my husband and I sailed Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. We visited three Haida villages, all of which were abandoned when their population was decimated by disease. The Haidas had a strong culture with traditions and strategies that served them well for thousands of years, but failed them after contact with white people. Their empire stretched from northern British Columbia to California but they also traveled to Peru in 50 foot dugout canoes.

Haida villages were strategically built on the waterfront. They fronted onto a bay where it was relatively easy to access the village. All of the homes and totem poles faced the bay. The back of the village was built up against a hill or mountain, or backed onto another bay that was difficult to access with many rocks or strong currents.

This newsletter focuses on leadership, positivity and strategy. It's informative to note how these concepts come together in organizations. All three increase individual, team and organizational performance. All are critical to success. A key question: how well is your organization creating the linkage between these concepts to create intentional, enhanced, and sustained performance? We support our clients in doing just that. If this is something you'd like to discuss, please contact us. We'd be happy to have a conversation.

Have a wonderful summer.
