President's Message

For the past two years, the Children's Hospital of San Antonio has been undergoing an exciting transformation. Our partnership with Baylor College Medicine (BCM) and Texas Children's Hospital has been an invaluable resource for the children and families of South Texas and beyond. To date, more than 160 BCM faculty have joined our team at the Children's Hospital of San Antonio providing much needed, specialized pediatric care for our community.  We value our private practice physicians an pediatricians for the important and amazing work done every day for children and families of San Antonio.

First Patients Move Onto Newly Completed Floors

We recently celebrated a major milestone!  Floors 8 and 9 welcomed the first patients on October 28 and 29, 2014.  The newly transformed floors provide inpatient care for our Cancer and Blood Disorders Center patients on the 8th floor and our Special Medicine and Physical Rehabilitation Center patients on the 9th Floor.

The floors include 40 new private rooms, family lounges, high-tech nurses stations, and a distinct San Antonio feel.  Each floor has its own distinct color and artwork to help patients and families navigate the Hospital.

Patients who have stayed in the new rooms have said that they especially love the new windows that allow in more light and provide incredible views of downtown San Antonio.

New Testing - Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory

The Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory is one of the new diagnostic tools that have been implemented in the section of pediatric pulmonary medicine at the Children's Hospital of San Antonio. Cardiopulmonary exercise tests can be performed on a cycle ergometer or a treadmill using different exercise protocols.  During the studies, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, minute ventilation, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, electrocardiogram, and perceptive responses are measured non-invasively. Data collected allows the assessment of the child's aerobic capacity and his/her physiological responses to exercise. The exercise test uses a physiological integrative approach that is useful to assess children with a wide variety of complaints such as exercise-induced symptoms and shortness of breath of unclear etiology. Because the test is non-invasive, the data provided by exercise tests over time are used to assess the response to therapy and/or the clinical course of children with asthma, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary vascular disease, thoracic insufficiency syndrome, connective tissue disorders, etc.  For patients with complex cardiopulmonary disorders, a clinical evaluation is scheduled prior to the performance of the exercise test with Felix Shardonofsky, MD, director of the exercise laboratory.

To schedule an appointment, call our Central Scheduling at 210.704.4708.

The Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory is located on the 2nd floor of the Goldsbury Center for Children and Families.
