Lay Pastoral Care Team
As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community. - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, James Hencke, Abby Jacobs, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding, and Tom Neel

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
Summer Schedule
I will have regular office hours through the month of June.
I will be on vacation for the month of July and have arranged for other UU ministers to provide pastoral care coverage for that time. This list (summer pastoral care coverage) is being provided to the Parish Board, to members of the Worship Committee (one of whom will be at each of the summer Sunday services) and to Janice Zazinski in the office. You may contact any of them for the names.
During the month of August I will not have office hours (officially I am on Study Leave) but I will be on call for pastoral care concerns and for meetings if committees or other groups need my presence. August is my preparatory time when I plan out my work for the year - e.g., sermon topics, including hymn and reading selections; thinking about the training programs that are needed in order to refresh different groups; and I do much of the studying and writing necessary for this. I also do more reading than usual, reading which may or may not find its way into sermons. And I take time for contemplation, for reflection and for being present to the natural world in ways that fill my spirit. The best way to contact me in August (as, indeed, at any time) is by e-mail.
My regular office hours will resume right after Labor Day. I hope you all - each and every one of you - have the summer you dream of.
Remember that we are a year-round congregation and although they will be on a different schedule, we do have a wonderful array of lay-led services, one every Sunday throughout the summer.

Music Notes from Alfa Radford
'My cup surely did run over' on Sunday, May 31st!! My heart is filled with affection and thanks for all the wonderful music, tributes, gifts, delicious food, enthusiastic good wishes, and so much more... it was truly amazing: all envisioned and brought to fruition by Chuck Claus, my good friend and colleague for the past 30 years. Warm thanks to everyone (too numerous to list!) who helped make the occasion so very special! Being installed as Minister of Music, Emerita of The First Church in Belmont was an honor I shall always cherish.
During the three services and the grand reception, my soul was at once weeping and soaring! It was indeed a bittersweet day, as I realized how much I will miss facilitating and making music with our adult and children's choirs, various vocal and instrumental ensembles, directing the musicals, AND playing the magnificent Casavant pipe organ, which never ceases to thrill my spirit.
With loving and joyful blessings, Alfa Joy Radford

Children's Religious Education: It Takes a Congregation
Meister Eckhart is quoted as saying: "The only prayer that needs to be said is, 'Thank you.'" So, from the bottom of my heart, expressions of deepest gratitude: thank you all for making this a successful year in CRE. So, here's a HUGE shout out to all of the staff, CRE committee members, teacher-volunteers and special programs volunteers who helped to make this year's CRE program so meaningful to the children in this congregation:
CRE Staff: Wendy Conroy, Denise Azar, and David Sugarman. CRE Committee: Wendy Conroy, Patricia Garcia, Lyn Hamer, Karsten Kueppenbender, Sandy Nyack and Gerri Strickler. DCRE Search Committee: Catherine Claypoole, Tony Fitzpatrick, Eleanor Sugarman, and Beth Westlund. OWL teachers: Clifford Backman, Sarah Calkins, Wendy Conroy, Stefan Frank, Steve Garschina-Bobrow, Dick Lehr, Siobhan O'Neill, and Lynn Rosenbaum. Classroom teachers and Neighboring Faiths chaperones: Lee Ackerson, Ed Amer, Tim Anderson, Ben Bauer, Jessica Bennett-Burt, Rachel Bruno, Sarah Calkins, Alan Cantor, Sarah Caputo, Sheila Cavanaugh, Anna Churchill, Wendy Conroy, Kate Coyne, Kathy Craig-Widdison, Lauren Crocker, Lindi DeLorio, Melanie Deveikas, Mark Dolny, Tara Donner, Joanna Dunn, Erica Faldt Ciccolo, Jane Fischer, Gaby Garschina-Bobrow, Katherine Gates, Hamilton Gilbert, Jen Greenleaf, Marcus Greiner, Nancy Greiner, David Hamer, Lyn Hamer, Ana Hammock, Jessica Hausman, Jess Hicks, Laura Hill, Stephanie Houde, Carolyn Howard, Melissa Iriion, Sally Jacobs, Liz Keating, Sarah Kenniston, Lorraine Kermond, Bayard Klimasmith, Betsy Klimasmith, Karsten Kueppenbender, Anjali Kumar, Grace Lee, Jen Leigh, Wendy Leiserson, Vickie Livermore, Scott Moorman, Veera Mylapore, Dianne Musi, Siobahn O'Neill, Lisa Oteri, Kerry Palmer, Brad Power, Mary Power, Andrea Prestwich, Carrie Redi, Christine Rono, Jenna Rounds, Donna Ruvolo, Steve Saar, Kate Searle, Jennie Staples, Gerri Strickler, Eleanor Sugarman, Jim Sugarman, Jon Svetky, Leslie Talmadge, Kurian Thomas, Justine Uhlenbrock, Beth Westlund, and Peter Whitmer, Youth volunteers: Elena Parsons, Guy Parsons (Jr.) and Nina Ellard. Special Programs: Laura Caputo, Anna Churchill, Downing Cless, Kathy Crawley, Margaret Eklind, Patricia Garcia, Nancy Greiner, Lyn Hamer, Elizabeth Hansen, Jess Hicks, Anjali Kumar, Grace Lee, Wendy Leiserson, Karin Lehr, Alice Trexler, and Justine Uhlenbrock. Other: Guy Parsons (Sr.), Charles Yee, and Mary Louise Landfried.
Of course, with a list this long, I've probably missed someone who volunteered in some way this year, especially those stepping in at the last minute. Please forgive me, if I've overlooked you, and keep on giving your time and talent to the CRE program at FCB. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
The future of Unitarian Universalism depends on the life-span faith development of UU youngsters beginning as soon as they enter the doors of congregations such as FCB. The CRE program cannot raise these kids in a beloved community of many beliefs but shared values without your able assistance and support. We always need more people to volunteer to work and play with the children and youth of this congregation. Please sign-up for volunteering to teach, to chaperone, to lead, to participate, to help behind the scenes, to serve on the CRE Committee, to come to family-friendly events and worship services, to show you care about who these kids are and what matters to them.
"You've got to be carefully taught," ...day after day, week after week, year after year. It really does take a village (this congregation) to raise these young people to be compassionate, thoughtful, caring human beings!
~ Charlotte
Click here to register online now for 2015-2016 Children's RE Programs which allows you to register children from birth - 12th grade. All children must be registered for CRE.
Our children's religious education program for nursery through grade 8 is a cooperative effort. Once you have been attending at FCB for at least six months, we ask that each family teach Children's RE for at least eight weeks (you need not teach on consecutive Sundays) during the church year.
If you are unable to teach, we have other opportunities for you to help out the program, such as serving on the Children's Religious Education Committee, helping with special programs and events, and substituting as needed in the CRE classes (for a total of 16 hours per year per family).
All individuals who work with children in the CRE, youth and music programs at FCB must have a background check. If you are a new volunteer or need to renew your background check (once every three years), you can find links to the "background authorization" form as well as "volunteer driver" form and "teacher code of ethics" form here (http://uubelmont.org/coriandsori/).
