Save the Date - May 31alfa

Please join us on Sunday, May 31, in celebrating Alfa Radford's long tenure and service at First Church. Plans are underway for this festive event. Both services that day will have lots of music and reflections on the value and role music plays in the life of our church community.

The recognition for Alfa will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a brief ceremony in the Sanctuary, followed by a party in the Parish Hall with socializing and tributes. More details to come as plans are finalized. Hope you will be there to share with Alfa our thanks and best wishes.

Caring Connection

The Caring Connection is a group of Church members and friends who provide support to members of our community who find themselves in some difficulty and need short-term help. Please let us know if you could use some assistance, or know of someone who would benefit from our support. You may fill out a Caring Connection card, available in the hymnal holders and drop it in the collection basket, or contact Laurie Graham at caring@uubelmont.org or Janice at the Church, 617.484.1054 x201.

Lay Pastoral Care Team
As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community.   - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, James Hencke, Abby Jacobs, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding, and Tom Neel

Paul and Jim are regular performers at the First Church in Belmont as members of Positive Energy, and the Blood Mountain Brothers and occasionally as a duet. They have an uplifting style that features great vocals and mellow guitar accompaniment.

Their performance will benefit the Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence.

Grow Clinic! Grow Clinic!

Can it be that we're already speeding toward the end of our church year? That also means that our GROW CLINIC families will be losing one of their supports (us!) to help feed their infants and toddlers over the long summer months. Join in to help stock the shelves for summer. Thanks!!!

Belmont Rental Wanted
We - along with our two cats - are looking for an unfurnished two or three bedroom house, condo or apartment to rent in Belmont.
Ideally, our rental will begin on July 1st and be on a month-to-month basis, but we are prepared to be flexible (start earlier? sign a lease?) to find the right place.
And we're pretty sure we come with stellar local references! :-)
Give us a call or send an email with your ideas and leads.

Many thanks,
Sara Oaklander and Monte Allen

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior MinisterRev. David Bryce

Spring is finally and truly here.

Forsythia and daffodils are in bloom, trees and bushes are budding out and the grass is greening up. (Actually, as I look out my office window, there is one little patch of snow that I can see on the Town Green.)

It was a long winter, and I am glad to see it go. I look forward to days of sitting in warm sun on decks and patios, beaches and park benches.

And yet, I know that when next year's first snow falls I will be excited about the beauty of it, the wonder of it.

How fascinatingly fickle the human spirit is.

And the extra irony in this is that so often in our lives we seek for some measure of stability and predictability while at the same time seeking the novel and the new.

The flow of seasons gives us both the predictability and the ever-new moments that so many of us seek.

The cycle of life does the same; every stage of life gives us new gifts and new challenges.

It can be difficult to be grateful for these challenges.

I was not-quite-six when I started first grade. In kindergarten we had been in a kind of open classroom with chairs and tables that could be moved around and there were "play stations" around the room. Now, in first grade, we were in wood and wrought iron chairs that were set in rows and were bolted to the floor. One of the first things our teacher said to us was, "You are not in kindergarten anymore; play time is over".

Foreboding filled my little soul. This change I did not like.

Having a child was one of the greatest gifts in my life. At the same time I was haunted by a sense of responsibility that said, "You are not in kindergarten anymore; play time is over." That was true; and yet, as it turned out, there were ways in which play time had just begun because parenthood -- raising a child -- was and is one of my favorite things.

Interestingly I never feel nervous in my spiritual life. Perhaps that is because in my combined Humanist "death-is-the-end-of-all" faith and my Universalist "we-will-all-have-eternal-life-in-Heaven" faith there is no room or need for fear of the future, of the stage that comes after life. (Or perhaps I just hope that stage is far enough away that I need not think about it right now.)

Perhaps the lesson in all of this is to enjoy the moment; feel the trepidations and forebodings, but recognize and cherish the gifts as well.

      May it be so.

Music Notes from Alfa Radford

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways!

ROSES to the Sr. Choir for splendid singing of Tchesnokov's "Zhertva vechernjaja" last Sunday. And singing it in Russian!

Alfa Radford

More ROSES to the Nova Choir for a moving rendition of the well-loved African American Spiritual "Hush! Somebody's Callin' My Name."

BOUQUETS to Davron Monroe, tenor; and Chuck Claus, baritone, for responding to my request for the glorious duet from The Pearl Fishers by Bizet. Of course I was moved to tears, as were many in the congregation...  Such exquisitely beautiful music!

Parish Board News

This is the report from the Parish Board to members of the church. We are sending out a brief update in the Unitarian newsletter and in the Sunday order of service announcements to keep you informed about what issues are facing the parish. You are invited to find any one of us at coffee hour to inquire about these updates or anything else about which you'd like more information.˗ The Parish Board

Winter may finally be over but we are still dealing with her aftermath. Mike Flamang hired new contractors to complete the repairs to the building following the sprinkler freeze malfunction flood. We are awaiting carpet for Janice's office and upstairs.  We will finish work on Alfa's office in the next month as well.

Our highly successful Auction chaired by Marion Westgate brought in a total of $52,000 that supports the operating budget of the church for this year and next fiscal year.

Our Stewardship Drive has thus far netted roughly the same amount this year as last year at this time.  If you have not made your pledge yet, please consider doing so as soon as you can.  Any amount you can give is much appreciated and will help to keep our church community thriving.

The Parish Board has held its first of several meetings to outline next year's budget.  The budget will be presented to the parish at the annual meeting, May 17 at 5pm in the Parish Hall. Please join us!

Children's Religious Education: It Takes a Congregation

At FCB this year, a congregation-wide theme focusing on the environment flew under the radar, but the CRE theme during April focused on it. The environment is one of the four pillars of FCB's Social Action Committee (SAC), and this spring's social justice curriculum tied into these four pillars: human rights, poverty, environment, and peace.

The children began the month, appropriately enough on Easter Sunday, considering our seventh UU principle: "Respect for the interconnected web of all existence of which we are a part." Or in the words of the children's versions, "We believe in caring for the planet earth, the home we share with all living things." The three R's - reduce, re-use, and recycle - were explored the following week in each of the CRE classes and these environmentally sustainable actions were built upon by guest presenters, Alice Trexler and Downing Cless on April 20th. Alice and Downing represented the education group of the new-this-year FCB Green Committee. They took the kids on an exploratory tour to a small selection of places in the church building and grounds to talk about what FCB is already doing, and what more FCB could be doing, to be "greener." The kids had some really good ideas that will be passed along to the whole FCB Green Committee, including relying on outside daylight more.

Using recycled container for starting seeds, the kids will bring the month full circle, bringing some beauty into their environment. Any bedrangled sparrows in Belmont and surrounding towns just may find a sunflower to flutter around like butterflies, as the little sunflower in my Easter Sunday Story for All Ages dreamed they would.

You, too, can reduce, re-use and recycle more by contributing items and your time to the annual rummage sale. Take this opportunity together with your family members of all ages, to brainstorm about donating gently used and un-wanted items. You will reduce the need for someone else to buy new, you will allow someone else to re-use things you no longer want, and you will be helping others to recycle, restore and renew. In addition, the money raised during this event each year funds important aspects of FCB's congregational life, including SAC, FCB's Partner Church program, and the Stained Glass Window Fund. FMI: please contact rummage@uubelmont.org.

As we care for our planet earth, the perfect globe on which we live, we will live up to our human potential for goodness like the man who climbed down into the well again to bring water to a thirsty dog.

~ Charlotte

Highlights from Our Religious Education Wing

  • Pre-school/Kindergarten classes are engaging in Spirit Play with Eleanor and Jim Sugarman teaching the 9 am class, and Kate Searle leading the 11 am class with help from parent-volunteer teachers. Would you be interested in being trained to lead Spirit Play next spring? CRE will cover the cost of training. Let Charlotte know if you are interested; there may be a training in Melrose in mid-July.
  • In May, the Grades 1-6 Social Justice curriculum theme is Peace. The Annual CRE Intergenerational Tea will be May 3rd between services, if you are aged 70+ and in the database, you will be receiving an invitation. Elementary-aged children will be helping and hosting.
  • If you are interested in being trained to lead OWL, there are both K-1/4-6 and 7-9/10-12 happening at First Church in Nashua (NH) on July 10-12. OWL funds cover the cost of training. Registration deadline is 6/20/15. FMI, please contact Charlotte or Wendy.

The Birth of a Nation: How a Legendary Filmmaker and a Crusading Editor Reignited America's Civil War - Dick Lehr

Tuesday, April 28, 7:30 p.m., Parish Hall

1915 saw the release of D. W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation," both a cinematic masterpiece and a vitriolic racist diatribe. It brought about a backlash led by William Monroe Trotter, a Boston newspaper editor. Our own Dick Lehr's latest book explores this tumultuous period in American race relations. Book signing and refreshments.

Men's Fall Potluck Supper

Friday, May 1, 7pm, Upper Hall

Join other First Church men and their friends to share good food and connections. Please bring a beverage of your choice AND one of the following: main dish, salad, or dessert, to share. Contact jstaton@uubelmont.org for more information or sign up at coffee hour.

ALL-CHURCH RUMMAGE SALE, SATURDAY, MAY 9, 9 to 2 P.M.

The volunteer boards are filling up! NEW - on line signup at http://vols.pt/P1Evrp. The Sale still needs your help especially for set up on Sunday, May 3 and for Sale day and cleanup Saturday, May 9. Set up begins at 10 after the first service. Church members and friends who work for 2 hours during Rummage week are invited to shop for personal use at the pre-Sale on Friday evening May 8 from 6-8 PM. Bargains and finds galore!

Check the Sale circular for donation guidelines, available at our table in the Upper Gathering Hall. Almost anything that's resalable is wanted. Email fcb404@gmail.com with questions. Tax donation forms will be available on donation days.

The third beneficiary of the Rummage Sale is the Stained-Glass Window Fund. This past year we've become acutely aware of the ongoing repair and maintenance needs of our beautiful stained-glass windows. Our beloved Pilgrim window is being repaired with Fund dollars. By setting aside proceeds from its Rummage Sales each year, the Belmont Unitarian Alliance was able to renovate the Madonna Window in the early1990's. Rummage funds also provided more than half of the cost to renovate the Pilgrim Window in 2006-7. And more windows, the same age as our sanctuary, will be restored in the next few years, again with Rummage proceeds.
