Caring Connection

The Caring Connection is a group of Church members and friends who provide support to members of our community who find themselves in some difficulty and need short-term help. Please let us know if you could use some assistance, or know of someone who would benefit from our support. You may fill out a Caring Connection card, available in the hymnal holders and drop it in the collection basket, or contact Laurie Graham at caring@uubelmont.org or Susan at the Church, 617.484.1054 x201.

Lay Pastoral Care Team

As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community.   - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, James Hencke, Abby Jacobs, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding, and Tom Neel

Ushering opportunities are now opened from January through March for both the 9:00 and 11:00 o'clock services
Please consider signing up to usher. This key volunteer responsibility is a tremendous contribution to the smooth operation of our worship services. To select your dates now, sign up to usher on the bulletin board in the upper gathering area, or contact Leslie Kolterman (
Thank you for your service to First Church!

THE POWER OF SERVICE TO OTHERS

Rev. David M. Bryce

Services with Children's & Youth Choirs

9:00 & 11:00 Church Service

Childcare for infants and young children

Doing good things for others lifts our spirits. Part of the value of community is receiving support of many kinds; but the other aspect of that is giving support to others.

** Next Sunday, January 18 **

9:00 & 11:00am Worship Services

Rev. Rebecca Hinds of the UU Urban Ministry

Stepping Out in Love

This year as we celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. America is still sorely plagued by racism and inequality. What can we do in 2015? At our UU Urban Ministry we work towards King's vision of a beloved community by intentionally building relationships across the boundaries of race and class. This work requires us to love fiercely and step out of our comfort zones. Come learn all about it, our UU Urban Ministry programming and how you might get involved.

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior MinisterRev. David Bryce

Prayer Circles

In a recent (January 4) sermon I preached about prayer and mentioned the possibility of starting a prayer circle here at FCB.

Several people indicated an interest, but also wondered just what I was speaking about.

Prayer circles come in a variety of forms.

My vision for a prayer group here at FCB is that a group of people would agree that they would, individually, promise to take time during the week to sit down and pray for those who have requested prayer.  This need not be at the same time as everyone else in the group.

Anyone wishing to have prayers said for them would contact me.  I would forward their prayer request to the group.  This would be a simple request ("pray for me" or "pray for my upcoming surgery") and could be anonymous.

The purpose of the prayer circle would be to seek emotional support; it would be a matter of knowing that others are holding us in their hearts.  (I would hope that no one would use it in place of seeking professional help for any problem.)

As with the lighting of candles during our services, this would be means to be metaphorically held in the arms of our loving community.

If you are interested in being part of such a group, please let me know.  If you are interested in being prayed for by such a group, please let me know.

Joyful blessings -Alfa

Letter from Carolyn Howard, Parish Board President

Dear Members of the Congregation,

I'm sure you all know by now that Alfa Radford, our Minister of Music, and Susan Street, our church administrator, have both decided that 2015 will be their last year as esteemed staff members of First Church Belmont.  Susan is retiring, and Alfa is leaving for health-related reasons.  While I was saddened by this news, I have to remember that we are so fortunate, and I am so profoundly grateful, for the years of dedicated, excellent service (85 years between the two of them!) these two wonderful women have given our church community.

Change of this magnitude can stir feelings of instability, or it can excite feelings of growth and hope for the future.  As David has noted to our church staff and leadership, part of the process is grieving for what was.  Honoring that process is important.  But maintaining equilibrium is essential, and looking to the future with inspiration and positive energy is affirming.  We at First Church have the structures and support in place to move forward with verve: among the leadership, and among you, the congregation.

Both Alfa and Susan are working with us to make our transition to new staff as seamless as possible.  Susan has extended her time with us for a couple of months and Alfa is not leaving until June.  They are keepers of institutional memory and have been clear that we can continue to draw upon their wisdom about church related questions beyond their last day.  These are great gifts.  While they are here, we will go through our processes to fill their positions, working with the strong structures in place: the Parish Board, the Music Committee, and other church leadership.  A Parish Board subcommittee has been working to better define how new staff in the administrator's office can work to best serve the needs of a church that has grown in many ways during Susan's tenure.  A group of amazing volunteers (Miriam Baker, Sara Oaklander, Eva Patalas and Penny Schafer) has been completing administrative functions for three weeks while Susan was away for the holidays (thank you all!).  The Music Committee has already started the process of determining the best way of finding a Music Director.  The music program Alfa has created is uplifting, sustains our services with its beauty, and provides a consistent draw for new membership.  Maintaining the integrity and excellence of this asset to our community is a priority for church leadership.

The honesty, intelligence and thoughtfulness that members of the both the Parish Board and Music Committees are bringing to discussions of our immediate church needs is impressive.  With such talent among our leadership, throughout all of our church committees, and among you, our congregation as a whole, I am confident that we will meet change with the best plans and solutions for a bright, exciting future.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Howard

Parish Board President
