Grow Clinic! Grow Clinic!
~Many, many thanks to Chuck Claus and his Waldorf High School students who generously contributed 33 bags of food as a Thanksgiving gift to the Grow Clinic. Thanks Chuck!!! Anyone wanting to hold a food drive from their work-mates, book group or circle of friends please contact Kathy Crawley. You collect food and bring it to church, and we will take care of the rest!
~On December 21st at the Multigenerational Holiday Service, there will be a time to place gifts of food for the Grow Clinic kids under our community Christmas tree. Pick up a list of preferred foods at one of our displays. Baby foods of all stages, Enfamil with iron, and Flintstone vitamins are always appreciated.

Hooray for First Church! So Close! A Time To Be Deeply Thankful!
The Coffeehouse Committee set a goal of selling 60 Season Tickets for our 30th anniversary season. We have nearly done it! As of November 25, this wonderful church family had purchased 58 tickets, and there are still a number of folks who we think/hope are planning to get one! Gosh, maybe YOU can even help us break our all-time record! Your Coffeehouse Committee friends thank you all from the bottom of our hearts! And as you sat down to your Thanksgiving dinner, we hope you thought not only of the Guest at your Table, but also of the gratitude of our ten beneficiary organizations and their hundreds of needy and deserving clients. Thank you again and again.
If you still intend/hope/mean to/are considering purchasing a ticket to support this charitable program and take us the last few steps to our goal, here is your gentle and grateful reminder. Send your $99 check made out to First Church in Belmont, memo line marked Coffeehouse, to First Church in Belmont, P. O. Box 113, Belmont 02478. Or hand your check or cash to Jim Staton, Lauraine Dalton, Anne Selman, or Susan Street. And, ALWAYS, we thank you. You ARE the greatest. |

What Are the Rules About the Rules?
Rev. David M. Bryce
9:00 & 11:00 Church Service
Childcare for infants and young children
(For weather-related Service and Children RE class cancellations, please check 617.484.1054 x250.)
In a now somewhat old book entitled "Integrity" author Stephen L. Carter decries the decline of integrity and the tendency to give winning more importance than rules. But he also calls into question too rigid an adherence to rules. How does this apply to ethics and to "salvation"−whatever path one may be on?
** Next Sunday, December 14 **
10:30am One Service Only
Christmas Music Service
Messiah -G. F. Handel (1685-1759)

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
Okay, so I lied.
A few weeks ago my column used the metaphor of getting one's snow tires replaced and how I was going to make a point of enjoying winter, of enjoying the crackle of snow beneath my feet.
Then it snowed.
This column is not about snow or winter; it is about what happens when we have made a firm commitment to ourselves or others, a commitment about which we were entirely serious, but that we find we just cannot keep.
There is, of course, a sense of failure in that, a feeling that we ought to have done "better".
And there is a sense of wishfulness: "I wish I had not said that", or, "I wish I had been able to live up to my own expectations".
But there are times when an honest recognition of facts requires us to say to ourselves or to others, "I meant it, I fully intended to see it through, but it will not happen".
The risks here are manifold. Some people will lose faith in you and in your word.
You may lose faith in yourself, as well.
Some will no doubt feel that you knew all along that you would not fulfill your stated aim, that you somehow intentionally misled them.
But others will recognize a level of honesty in you that is important; an honesty that admits to shortcomings and failures.
That kind of honesty is difficult. Self-awareness can easily slip into self-judgment and self-condemnation.
And yet that honesty is important if we are to learn and grow.
May we always be open in all areas of life; may we accept our own limitations; and may we always find ourselves on the path to greater knowledge and achievement. |

Lay Pastoral Care Team
As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community. - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding, and Tom Neel |

GREEN SANCTUARY COMMITTEE SEEKS MORE MEMBERS After a summer service on the environment led by John Kolterman and Tom Neel, a new Green Sanctuary committee was started in September, after encouragement and start-up support from Patricia Garcia on behalf of the Social Action committee. Up to this point, a group of nine with John and Tom as co-chairs has met three times in order to review the UUA guidelines for Green Sanctuary status and to draft a charter that is the first step in the UUA process. The charter, which includes tentative plans for programs such as building energy efficiency and environmental education within the congregation, will be presented to the Parish Board on December 8. Having taken these preliminary steps, the Green Sanctuary committee (known now as the FCBGreen Committee) wants to expand membership in order to move forward with programs through several subcommittees. Everyone interested in environmental action at First Church is encouraged to attend a meeting on Sunday, December 14 at 12:45 in the Library and to get involved in planning the committee's programs for 2015. To ask questions or to express interest if unable to attend the meeting, email John at john.kolterman@gmail.com and/or Tom at nathorne@msn.com. |
