Caring Connection

The Caring Connection is a group of Church members and friends who provide support to members of our community who find themselves in some difficulty and need short-term help. Please let us know if you could use some assistance, or know of someone who would benefit from our support. You may fill out a Caring Connection card, available in the hymnal holders and drop it in the collection basket, or contact Laurie Graham at caring@uubelmont.org or Susan at the Church, 617.484.1054 x201.

Lay Pastoral Care Team

As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community.   - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding, and Tom Neel

LAST but not LEAST ... do NOT miss the upcoming Friday, November 21 Coffeehouse! Coffeehouse founder Jim Hall sings from the heart of the best of the folk music canon as he opens for our own enchanting and super-talented Bridget Curzi, who is NOT a little girl anymore! And we love that Jim was our first performer 30 years ago when Bridget was not yet even born into this church family. Life really does come full circle, doesn't it? Our featured beneficiary is Renewal House. Need we say more?

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior MinisterRev. David Bryce
Note: This is the second part of my column on "illegal immigration."

I am a believer in the Law; it is our attempt to reach justice.

But the Law can go astray, either because a law is bad (laws that discriminate against people based on race, gender, gender identity, etc.) or because the means used to enforce a law are bad (capital punishment, prisons with inhumane conditions, excessive jail term, etc.). When either laws or the enforcement of laws ignore the worth and dignity of individuals, when they deny human or civil rights, then they pervert justice and true justice demands opposition to those laws or enforcement measures.

Our current means of enforcing immigration laws include denial of due process, the tearing apart of families, and warehousing people in terrible circumstances. Whatever we may believe about immigration laws themselves, we should oppose the means being used to enforce them.

Note: The Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ have each just announced their support of the Sanctuary Movement (something I was unaware of when I wrote the first part of this column).

"BYE BYE BIRDIE" A SPECTACULAR SHOW!

A MILLION THANKS to ALL volunteers, named and un-named, and special BOUQUETS of appreciation to Costumer/Backstage Director, Sandy Nayak; Assistant Directors Ian Garvie, Vickie Livermore, Diane Lopez, Heather Quay, Kate Searle; Choreographer Michael Romero; Set Designer Greg Duckworth; Stage Mgrs. Ayla Lopez-Casanova & Meron Power: plus Mia Ackerson, Dawn & Tim Anderson, Ann Bible, Hilary Donovan, Laura Gomez-Ickes, Lisa Kavanaugh, Kathleen Kim, Julie Kirrane, Anjali Kumar, Lindi DeLorio, Jess Hicks, Melissa Irion, Karin Lehr, Sarah Thomas, John O'Connor, Grace Lee, Diane Miller, Brad & Mary Power, Susan & Scott Johnson, Guy Parsons III & IV, John & Robin Hughes, Stefan Frank, Peter Ickes, Jonathan Wolf, Leslie Wolf, Catherine Claypoole, Toby Lester, Gabby Garschina, David Searls, Susan Street, Alexandra Vacroux, Ed Imbier, Charles Yee, Ed Yee, and countless others! And ROSES to the Anderson Family for hosting a wonderful cast party. I must say, yet again, that a production of this scope required a large and dedicated team, and during the 8 weeks of rehearsals, various challenges were met with creative and generous spirit! In addition to the joy of participation behind the scenes, a great many First-Churchers became acquainted with one another while working together on "BYE BYE BIRDIE" resulting in wonderful church community-building. CONGRATULATIONS to the entire Cast and Crew!

Still humming those delightful tunes! -ALFA

Children's Religious Education Information

For the last several years, at least, the CRE Program has hired, from outside the congregation, qualified individuals to assist with the Sunday morning program. The two positions - Sunday Morning RE Assistant and Lead Pre-School/Kindergarten RE Teacher - went unfilled during the search over the spring and summer for a Director to lead the CRE program. The job of filling these two important positions was transferred to me when I started as Acting Director in September. Unfortunately, they remain unfilled despite my posting them through local preschools and an affiliated list-serve; area colleges, universities and divinity schools; and Craigslist and other recruitment venues. To date, I have received only three responses to the ads, and these have not gone beyond initial contact.

While the work of Wendy Conroy, CRE Assistant, has been tremendous and invaluable in smoothing this time of transition in the CRE program, Wendy's time and availability are limited and her passion is for our sexuality programs, OWL for 5th & 6th graders (Spring) and 8th graders (Winter-Spring). (Be sure to thank her for all she does when you see her!) Between Wendy and I, we have been getting along, but we really do need dependable people in these positions.

The Sunday Morning RE Assistant helps with set-up and clean-up of lessons and classroom spaces. This person is also available to fill in as a second teaching adult at the last minute on Sunday mornings, or stand in for me when I am out of town (as Gaby Garschina-Bobrow and Eleanor Sugarman did on October 26, for which I am very grateful). This position is suitable for post-secondary students or others looking for a little extra income each month.

The Lead Pre-S/K RE Teacher facilitates our two Pre-S/K classes and provides expertise in early childhood learning as well as the consistency needed by children of this age-level to feel safe and learn best. The ideal candidate will have Pre-S/K teaching experience.

Anyone (volunteer or paid) who works with our children has to clear CORI/SORI background checks, which is one of our safe congregations practices at FCB.

The congregation has a policy regarding hiring which precludes members of the congregation from being eligible for these positions, but that doesn't mean that you can't help in finding appropriate candidates. If you know of someone who might be interested and qualified, please let them know of our openings and have them contact me for a job description.

~Charlotte Lehmann, Acting Director of Children's Religious Education

Office hours (generally): Sun 8am-1pm and Tue/Wed/Thur 10am-6pm.

     E-mail: clehmann@uubelmont.org.

Highlights from Our Religious Education Wing

In our World Religions classes, we shift our attention from learning about Islam to the eastern traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism as well as getting a taste of holiday traditions from around the world.

Neighboring Faiths: In addition to visiting worship services in other faith traditions and discussing these experiences, our 7th & 8th graders engage in thoughtful conversation around issues raised in the movies. Through Popcorn Theology programs they wrestle with ethics and morality. This is something every family can do when they watch movies or television programs together.

Among Us
Our love and sympathy to Gladys Allen on the death of Lloyd Allen
(10.31.21 - 10.30.14). A memorial service will be held at the UU Fellowship of Falmouth on December 13 at 10:00am.

The First Church Biennial Auction: "An Evening at the Oscars"

Just as winter becomes impossible to bear, we'll be rolling out the red carpet for you and your friends at the First Church Auction, the season's most elegant event. Bask in the glamor of Hollywood: Come costumed  as a movie star, a director, a cinematographer, a favorite movie character, or an extra! (You can dress up or down as much as you want-we're UUs, after all.) Mark your calendar now (snowdate February 8). And in the meantime, be thinking about what you can donate. Do you have an organization or an individual in your business or personal network who would be willing to provide goods or services? (A celebrity chef? A life coach? A clutter buddy? A portrait artist?) For questions, suggestions, or to volunteer (we need you!), write to Marion Westgate, Auction Chair, at UU.Belmont.Auction@gmail.com.

CARING FOR OLDER ADULTS

Miriam Baker & Deborah Blumberg Thur, Nov 13, 7:30pm, CR

Many people are juggling jobs, families and their parents' or other family members' increasing medical needs, frequent emergencies and ongoing need for care. How do we cope with the needs of our loved ones and find some balance in our own lives? What do we need to learn as we take on this task? How do we find information and community? If you find yourself in this position, you are welcome at this group for discussion and support. This is a drop-in group so please attend when it is convenient

LIVING WITH SERIOUS ILLNESS

Nanny Almquist and Kathy Lind - Thu, Nov 13, 7:00pm, Library

Our lives are constantly changing and facing changes that involve illness makes us feel vulnerable. This ongoing support group facilitated by Kathy Lind and Nanny Almquist provides a space and time to understand and process feelings and circumstances related to dealing with serious illness, both for caregivers and people in all stages of discovery and recovery.

"VOICES OF THE WEST BANK AND ISRAEL" - Mark Golden

Sunday, Nov 16, 12:30-1:30pm, Parish Hall

Mark Golden will present a brief video entitled, 'Voices of the West Bank and Israel'. This video records Mark's experience last year during a two week visit to Israel, East Jerusalem and the West Bank. As an American Jew with a keen interest in Middle Eastern politics, Mark enters this profound conversation by talking to ordinary Palestinians and Israelis. The film explores important themes including the "Separation Wall." It also documents the response of the Israeli military to a peaceful Palestinian demonstration. Mark will be available to answer questions and facilitate a discussion of the issues. Sponsored by Social Action & Adult Programs

BELMONT ALLIANCE LUNCH AND PROGRAM

Wed, Nov 19, 12noon, Upper Hall - All Women and Men Welcome!

Bring your own sandwich; we will provide soup, beverage, and dessert. The suggested lunch donation is $1.00 per person. The Alliance program will be at Tufts University's Art Gallery. We will carpool, leaving First Church by 12:45pm. The recommended donation for the Art Gallery is $3 per person and includes free parking and a free guided tour. The tour is about 45 minutes long. To help us prepare for the number of attendees for this event, it is important to call Susan Street (tel 617.484.1054 x201) and let her know that you will attend and the number of guests you will bring.

FIRST CHURCH BOOK GROUP

In November, the First Church Book Group will celebrate another night of poetry when we will share, ponder, savor, and discuss the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop. We will be meet a week early on Wednesday, November 19, at 7:30pm in the Library. Bishop, during much of her lifetime, was not well known but she is now regarded as one of the most significant American poets of the 20th century. We invite you to delve into her work and come prepared to read one of her poems that speaks to you, or to just come and listen. You can find her work in libraries and on the web. One place to start is the Poetry Foundation at: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/bio/elizabeth-bishop#about

The Book Group is always open to new members and does not require a continuing commitment. Please contact Anne Stuart at astuart@uubelmont.org with questions and to confirm attendance. The Book Group will not be meeting in December.

SCIENCE AND SPIRITUALITY

Thursday, Nov 20, 7:30pm, CR - Ken Bernstein and Edwin Taylor
Rino DiBartolo will lead a discussion on C. P. Snow's Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution. "Oh, those are mathematicians! We never talk to them." a Cambridge University don reassured a visitor who could not get a response from men on either side of him at High Table. At MIT the tables can be reversed; humanities professors may feel the need to justify their presence on the faculty of this engineering school. C. P. Snow writes beautifully: Why not read the entire short 54-page book posted at eftaylor.com/sands. If pressed for time, stop at the top of page 38.

KNITTING CIRCLE

Thursday, Nov 20, 8-9:30pm, Classroom 4 - Eva Patalas

Come join us in the fun and fellowship of knitting with a genial group on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. Projects could include knitting for non-profit organizations such as Caps for Kids, making small gifts for the Holiday Fair or working on personal projects. Everyone is welcome and no commitment is necessary. Contact Eva with any questions.

SECOND FRIDAY COFFEEHOUSE

Please mark your calendars for November 21 when Bridget Curzi and Jim Hall will perform at the Second Friday Coffeehouse. The beneficiary is the Renewal House.
