Guy Fawkes Day is a British holiday celebrated on November 5. Fawkes intended to blow up Parliament, was found out, arrested and executed; the holiday celebrates this. Was the plan of Fawkes an act of terrorism; was it a justified action by and for an oppressed minority; was it both? Sneak preview: We human beings tend to use a double standard in our judgments. If there is an ultimate standard, whether Divine, Cosmic or Human, a standard by which my life is judged, how do I want it applied to me?

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
Ministers may not (and ought not) violate the rules of the Internal Revenue Service for non-profits by supporting particular candidates or parties. But ministers may and ought to speak to moral and ethical issues.
This coming election day the voters of Massachusetts will be asked to decide whether it will be required that certain employees shall earn sick days. The covered employees could then use these sick days to care for themselves, their children, spouse or parent. (The entire proposition is readily available on line, so I will not repeat it here.)
Our Unitarian Universalists proclaim that we affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; and that we affirm and promote justice, equity and compassion in human relations.
These principles, and my own conscience and compassion, cause me to believe that people have a right (yes, a right) to certain basic life conditions. Among these is my belief that in time of illness they should be able to care for themselves or a close family member without fear of losing their job or losing a day's pay-which for so many means losing their ability to pay their bills.
We cannot yet ensure these conditions for every person in the world, but we can help to ensure these conditions for many people here in Massachusetts. I urge you to do so. |

Lay Pastoral Care Team
As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community. - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding, and Tom Neel

Transylvania Partner Church Committee (TPCC) News
When you are in the Gathering Hall or walking about the church grounds, take a look at the beautiful memorial kopjafa given to us by our Partner Church in Désfalva, Romania. The kopjafa was carved by János Kiss and Sándor Molnár-Kiss to honor our partnership of nearly 25 years. The kopjafa installation was arranged by Bob Corning, Roger Gallagher and the Landscaping Committee. After the installation, plantings were added, and members of the TPCC took turns watering them throughout the summer. Lynn Read, Livia Racz, Hanna Racz-Kozuma, Nancy Davis, Heli Tomford, and Sherry Jones were members of the watering and weeding crew. Recently, tulips and daffodils were planted for next spring. Tulips, particularly red ones, are a favorite motif among Transylvanian Unitarians.
The committee has recently sent educational stipends of $250 to 12 students from Désfalva. A holiday gift of $1,000 was also sent. This money is for the use of the Désfalva congregation as they see fit. In the past they have chosen to buy vegetable cooking oil which is distributed to church members who would otherwise use only lard in their cooking. The TPCC is actively looking for additional members. If you are interested in joining us, please contact partnerchurch@uubelmont.org. Our next meeting is November 4 at 7:30pm in the church conference room. We welcome you! |
