Caring Connection
The Caring Connection is a group of Church members and friends who provide support to members of our community who find themselves in some difficulty and need short-term help. Please let us know if you could use some assistance, or know of someone who would benefit from our support. You may fill out a Caring Connection card, available in the hymnal holders and drop it in the collection basket, or contact Laurie Graham at caring@uubelmont.org or Susan at the Church, 617.484.1054 x201. |
Lay Pastoral Care Team
As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community. - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding, and Tom Neel |

Climate Change
Rev. Victor H. Carpenter
9:00 & 11:00 Church Service
Childcare for infants and young children
(For weather-related Service and Children RE class cancellations, please check 617.484.1054 x250.)
I am staring at a photo of the largest climate change mobilization in history (80 NYC blocks long). Very impressive but only the beginning of a social movement that will outstrip the changes wrought by the Civil Rights Movement of the last century. Climate Change is finally gaining traction; new connections are emerging that link labor, women's rights, racial justice and the environment. What can a liberal church do to ready itself for the storms that lie ahead?

Rev. David M. Bryce preaching, When Running Away Is Winning
|
|
Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister
What gives you satisfaction?
Not joy, not elation, not euphoria, just a sense of satisfaction.
I am thinking of the sense of satisfaction that can fill our lives even when we have times of stress or periods of anger or sadness.
There is a satisfaction, a sense of underlying contentedness, which fills our lives when we feel that we are doing the right thing, keeping the right balance, being of service.
If that sense is in our lives, then we can weather the difficult times much more easily because--despite temporary troubles--our lives feel meaningful and we feel grounded in wellness.
For some that grounding is faith in God; for some it is faith in humanity or human nature, or in themselves; for others it is trust in the unfolding grandeur of the universe.
We join together in religious community in part to be reminded of whatever it is that grounds us individually.
I hope that you find it here, in our congregation. |

Children's Religious Education Information
Sunday School Program Notes
Children must be registered to attend Sunday morning religious education classes. If you haven't registered your child(ren) yet, please follow this link to our online registration system: http://uubelmont.org/childrens-re/.
Nursery, preschool and Kindergarten-aged children begin in their classrooms at 9 and 11 o'clock.
Children in Gr. 1-8 begin in the Sanctuary for the first portion of the service and then move to their classrooms around 9:20 or 11:20am. On the 1st Sunday of each month grades 1-6 gather in the Library instead of attending service in the Sanctuary. Look for posters in the entryway on Sunday mornings for where children are meeting.
Sunday morning classes end at 10:15am and 12:15pm. Children in Gr. 3 & above will be released from class at those times. Children in Gr. 2 & younger must be picked up promptly by a parent at the end of classes.
October Sunday School Schedule
Our combined pre-S/K classes are exploring their uniqueness, emotions and friendships using the Treasure Hunting curriculum. They are starting to add items they make to their treasure boxes.
Children in Gr. 1-6 are exploring World Religions. The first Sunday of each month is a combined learning experience; together they will be introduced to Islam on October 5. On October 12, the combined grades 1-6 classes will participate in an activity to help Belmont Serves.
We are still looking for teachers, especially at 11am, to explore and learn alongside our children. Please contact Charlotte Lehmann, Acting Director of CRE, at clehmann@uubelmont.org if you are interested in teaching. All new volunteer teachers will need to complete background check authorization forms and to sign code of conduct forms prior to teaching. Access forms via this link: http://uubelmont.org/coriandsori/.
Neighboring Faiths program for 7th & 8th grade youth
The first visit of the 7th graders is to our own worship service on October 5. That same day, the 8th graders visit an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) congregation. Sprinkled throughout the year are a series of Popcorn Theology sessions; on Sunday, October 12, the film is "Jurassic Park."
If you are a parent with a youth enrolled in Neighboring Faiths, we must have a completed permission form for each child. Parent volunteers are needed to drive to/from the visits. Volunteers must have background checks and fill out volunteer driver forms. Access forms via this link: http://uubelmont.org/neighboring-faiths/.
Congregation-wide theme: Environmental Stewardship
The children will explore this theme on Sundays scattered throughout the church year. Families may wish to do the activities related to geology in the Fall 2014 issue of the UU World's Family Pages as one way to engage with the Environmental Stewardship theme. This and other Family Pages issues are available from the UUA: http://www.uua.org/re/families/153856.shtml.
Charlotte Lehmann, Acting Director of Children's Religious Education

BELMONT SERVES DAY
Belmont Serves is a town-wide event that coordinates local volunteers for a day of fun, fellowship and service (to see all of its activities go to http://www.belmontrc.org/service.html). It is a project of the Belmont Religious Council, which is the interfaith council for the town of Belmont and includes both lay and clergy members from its participating congregations. First Church is a member of the Council.
Belmont Serves is an opportunity for all of us from First Church to work with members of other congregations on the many projects that are part of this day of service. While the chosen day itself - Monday, October 13 - is the main day of service if you are not available on that day, the Belmont Food Pantry is one of the many service projects included in Belmont Serves and they will have a door-to-door food drive to increase their supplies and to provide residents with support.
If you can commit the time on that Monday, Nancy Davis will be at Claypit Pond, leading two endeavors: picking up trash and large woody debris; and pruning woody shrubs. If you are interested in helping with that project contact Nancy at ndavis@uubelmont.org. |

"HOW AN UNDERCOVER NARCOTICS OFFICER TURNED AGAINST THE WAR ON DRUGS" - Jack Cole with an introduction by Tom Neel - Tue, Oct 14, 7:30pm, Parish Hall
Retired undercover DEA agent Jack Cole will discuss the class and racial bias underlying our drug laws and how his very personal involvement in carrying out those laws led him to have a dramatically different point of view. LEAP: Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, founded in 2002, is a group of former law enforcement officers that works to educate the public and to change our way of thinking about the unintended harmful consequences that result from the war on drugs. For more information contact Tom Neel tneel@uubelmont.org. Co-sponsored by Social Action and Youth. |

SCIENCE AND SPIRITUALITY - Thur, Oct 16, 7:30pm, CR
Bruce Dame will lead a discussion on Humanism. Humanism meets religion head-on, dispenses with God, and fashions a guide to living from a view about human nature itself. The reading combines Humanist Manifestos I and III with portions of the book "Humanism as the Next Step" by Lloyd and Mary Moran. Download the reading from http://eftaylor.com/sands |
SECOND FRIDAY COFFEEHOUSE - Oct 17, 7:30pm, Parish Hall
Mark your calendars for Diane Taraz's CD Release Party at the Second Friday Coffeehouse! Diane will be introducing her newly recorded CD-"Let's Do It!" The realization of her long-term dream, the CD includes 12 of Diane's most beloved jazz standards, interpreted in her inimitable style-which one critic described as a "no-frills voice, ever so natural, yet so rich and vibrant!" (Amazon) Diane will be joined on the SFCH stage by 4 of the 5 other musicians who contributed to the CD-Mike Duke (guitar), Peter Tillotson (bass), Billy Novick (clarinet), and Eric Kilburn (mandolin)-along with Steve Rose on drums. "THE DIGNITY AND INDIGNITIES OF AGING"
Sun, Oct 19, 12:30-2pm, Library - Jackie James with Edwin Taylor Getting old can be a challenge. The body demands more of our time and attention than it did in earlier days, memory is slipping, and we worry about mental decline. On the other hand, research on aging suggests ways to age successfully. What can we learn that prepares us to live richly and contribute to society during old age? |
