Lay Pastoral Care Team

As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community.   - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, Steve Saar, Martha Spaulding, and Tom Neel

Sharing: A Tale of Two Hummingbirds

Rev. David M. Bryce

9:00 & 11:00 Church Service

Childcare for infants and young children

(For weather-related Service and Children RE class cancellations, please check 617.484.1054 x250.)

This past summer I have spent many pleasant hours watching birds at our feeders, including hummingbirds. As I did so my mind was drawn repeatedly to the similarities between our cousins (the other living beings with whom we share this planet) and ourselves. Watching the interactions between two hummingbirds caused me to think a bit about sharing and non-sharing; caring and non-caring.

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior MinisterRev. David Bryce
Autumn always comes too soon for me. I so love summer that I resist the charm and allure of the Fall. There is something about the slow, drifting sense of summer that is just so "in sync" with my spirit.
And yet, when it finally is in its full unfolding−and I am finally in full acceptance mode−autumn is wonderful. Even though it is full of endings (the dying back of flowers, the turning and falling of the leaves, the fading of the sun into shorter days), it fills me with the energy of new beginnings.

That is the paradox of so many aspects of life. Endings that can be very sad and strongly resisted turn out to be the start of new adventures and new ways of seeing, being and doing.

May this be the start of a year of renewal for all of us, for each of us, and for our community.

So much of life is like that.

Children's Religious Education Information

Sunday School Program Notes

Children must be registered to attend Sunday morning religious education classes. Thank you to the 70 families, who have already registered 113 children, you have made planning for fall classes so much easier! If you haven't had a chance to register yet, please follow this link to our online registration system: http://uubelmont.org/childrens-re/.

Sunday morning classes end at 10:15am and 12:15pm. Children in grades 3 and above will be released from class at those times. Children in grade 2 and younger must be picked up promptly by a parent at the end of classes.

Nursery, preschool and Kindergarten-aged children begin in their classrooms at 9 and 11 o'clock. Children in grades 1 through 8 begin in the Sanctuary for the first portion of the service and then move to their classrooms at about 9:20 or 11:20am. On the first Sunday of each month they will gather in the Library instead of attending service in the Sanctuary.

September Sunday School Schedule

Sunday morning classes began on September 7 for Nursery through Kindergarten-aged children, while grades 1 and above attended the multigenerational Water Communion Ingathering Service.

On September 14, for those not at Sandy Island, there will be regular class for Nursery through Kindergarten and community games for grades 1 through 8.

Regular classroom lessons for grades 1 through 8 will begin on Sunday, September 21. The fall/winter term curriculum will focus on World Religions, followed in the winter/spring term by Social Action beginning in February.

New teachers

All new volunteer teachers will need to complete background check authorization forms and to sign code of conduct forms prior to teaching. Access forms via this link: http://uubelmont.org/coriandsori/. We will be contacting you directly about scheduling for the orientation session.

Calling all parents of 7th and 8th graders

Our 7th and 8th grade youth participate in the Neighboring Faiths program. This program is offered during the 11 o'clock service only. It spans all of 7th grade and continues through the fall of 8th grade. It involves learning about various faith traditions and then going on visits to experience worship in other faith communities.

If you are a parent with a youth enrolled in Neighboring Faiths, you will be contacted by a Neighboring Faith Coordinator. Families must complete a permission form for each child. Parent volunteers are needed to drive to and from the visits. Volunteers must have background checks and must fill out volunteer driver forms. Access forms via this link: http://uubelmont.org/neighboring-faiths/.

Congregation-wide theme this year is Environmental Stewardship

Therefore the children will explore this theme on Sundays scattered throughout the church year. Families may wish to do the activities related to geology in the Fall 2014 issue of the UU World's Family Pages as one way to engage with the Environmental Stewardship theme.

- Charlotte Lehmann, Acting Director of Children's Religious Education

Introducing Charlotte Lehmann, Acting Director of Children's Religious Education

Charlotte is a 2012 graduate of Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago. She recently served as a full-time Ministerial Intern at the UU Congregation of Binghamton (NY). Previously she completed a 2-year part-time internship at DuPage UU Church in Naperville, IL. Charlotte is a Candidate for UU Ministry and will interview with the Ministerial Fellowship Committee (MFC) in early December.

Charlotte is a life-long UU and has many years of congregational leadership experience encompassing all aspects of church life, from buildings and grounds to finance, from life-span faith development to worship and music, in several UU congregations.

Charlotte completed her Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She received a Certificate in Mediation Training from the University of Southern Maine. In addition to the M.Div., she has both a B.A. and a M.S. in Geological Sciences. Charlotte's reflections on being a geologist and Unitarian Universalist appeared in the Fall 2014 issue of the UU World's Family Pages.

Charlotte's interest in alternative spiritualities has taken her to Peru, France and Scotland. She is a Sundoor Breathwork Practioner and Master Certified Firewalk Instructor. Charlotte is a strong advocate for environmental justice, reproductive justice, sexual orientation and gender equality, civil rights and anti-oppression work. Charlotte has described her theology as emergent, humanistic, religious naturalism; she resonates strongly with process theology and Michael Dowd's creatheism.

In her spare time, Charlotte engages in several spiritual practices, a number of outdoor activities, artistic and cultural interests, cooking, reading and watching movies, to name a few favored past-times.

Caring Connection

The Caring Connection is a group of Church members and friends who provide support to members of our community who find themselves in some difficulty and need short-term help. Please let us know if you could use some assistance, or know of someone who would benefit from our support. You may fill out a Caring Connection card, available in the hymnal holders and drop it in the collection basket, or contact Laurie Graham at caring@uubelmont.org or Susan at the Church, 617.484.1054 x201.

Among Us
Our love and sympathy to Joan Loewenberg and Robert Donaghey on the death of Joan's mother, Shirley Loewenberg on August 2.

Our love and sympathy to the Braucher family on the death of long-time member Betty Braucher on August 29. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 25 at 2pm.

Long-time member Mary Pye will be remembered at a memorial gathering on Sunday, September 14 at 12:30pm in the Parlor.

A memorial service for Ruben Casanova will be held on Saturday, September 27 at 2:00pm followed by a reception in the Upper Hall.

The Pilgrim Window Is Out

When you reenter the sanctuary in September, you may be surprised to see that construction materials are temporarily filling the place of our beautiful Pilgrim Window. The Window was removed on August 16 to resolve its structural issues which became apparent this past spring. Light leaks began to appear at the top of the window where the glass was pulling away from the lead.

Our FCB Window team, consisting of Robin Neely, stained-glass consultant; Peter Quigley, structural engineer; Grant Monahon; Roger Gallagher; Bob Corning; the Window Committee; and ably assisted by Carolyn Howard; has been analyzing the Window's current condition and exploring potential solutions. We're working in conjunction with Lyn Hovey Studios, the Window's restorer in 2006-7. Our study and negotiations took longer than anticipated, thus the delay in de-installing the Window. We're hopeful that it will be re-installed by the end of this calendar year. The FCB Window Committee - Nanny Almquist, Nancy Davis, and Gerri Strickler

SCIENCE AND SPIRITUALITY

Ken Bernstein and Edwin Taylor - Thur, Sept 18, 7:30pm, CR

Edwin Taylor will lead a discussion on Jim Holt's book Why does the World Exist? This must be the basic existential question. As Leibnitz phrased it: "Why is there something rather than nothing?" Two obvious alternative answers: (1) God made the Universe from nothing, or (2) If nothing existed, this question would not be asked. A brief 25 pages of reading: John Updike's take on the question, a meditation on our inevitable "Return to Nothingness," and an evening stroll across a Paris bridge. For the reading, go to eftaylor.com/sands and download the file WhyWorldExist.pdf

KNITTING CIRCLE

Nancy Davis and Eva Patalas - Thur, Sept 18, 8-9:30pm, cl4

Come join us in the fun and fellowship of knitting with a genial group. Projects could include knitting for non-profit organizations such as Caps for Kids, making small gifts for the Holiday Fair or working on personal projects. Everyone is welcome and no commitment is necessary. Contact Eva with any questions.

"SUMMERS PILGRIMAGES"

Catherine Stalberg - Sunday, Sept 21, 12:30pm, Parlor

When David Bryce told us in June, "Your summer assignment is to go on a pilgrimage," did any of you take him up on it? If so, what did you do? Was it physical, did you travel? Was it emotional/mental/spiritual, perhaps with no traveling? Has your pilgrimage ended, and if so how? Was it in any way a UU pilgrimage? What did you learn from it? Join Catherine Stalberg in sharing your summer stories. Those who wish to listen only are welcome too. Refreshments provided.

FIRST CHURCH MEN'S GROUP

Will Cordis and Joe Weiss - Sun, Sept 21, 4-5:30pm, Library

Welcome to all First Church men who are interested in meeting and getting to know others to share experiences, issues, and joys from the heart on a regular basis. The group meets on the first and third Sundays of each month with a check-in and topic for dialog. This month we will examine, among other emergent topics "What do men need, and many times do not get, in intimate relationships?" If you are interested but cannot attend this meeting, contact either Will Cordis wcordis@uubelmont.org or Joe Weiss jweiss@uubelmont.org.

Friday, Sept 26, 7pm, Upper Hall

"EATING OUR VALUES" at THE COMMUNITY TABLE

Rachel Greenberger - Tuesday, Sept 30, 7:30pm, Library

Community Table is a two-year-old social innovation developed by Food Sol at Babson College (www.foodsol.org) for sparking relevant and actionable community interactions on important topics connected to food. The theme of our Community Table will be "Eating Our Values" and UU member Martha Spaulding's daughter, Rachel Greenberger, Director of Food Sol, will facilitate. Limited to 25 people. To register contact landerson@uubelmont.org
