Parking At First Church

Parking has been a First Church issue since our founding members needed to "park" their horses and buggies across the street in 1857.

We ask that you use the following guidelines:

·   Reserve the spaces in our lot for those who are seriously inconvenienced by walking a block or two---the physically challenged, individuals with very small children, etc.

 ·   Reserve the spaces in our lot for those who are new to our church and might be discouraged from visiting if they cannot figure out where to park.

·    If you park on church grounds, park only in designated spots. Parking on the grass and the driveways damages the grass and, more importantly, blocks fire lanes.

 ·   Honor the parking spaces adjacent to the post office boxes intended for use by neighbors who are stopping to mail letters on Sunday mornings. This request applies to the spaces on both sides of Concord Avenue.

Where are legally acceptable places to park on Sundays?

·   the Post Office lot (We have an agreement with the Post Office.)

·   on Concord Avenue between the Underpass and the Underwood pool

·   in front of the Lion's Club

·   in the Claflin Street lot in the Town Center

·   at the Belmont Town Library

Please be aware that the Town Green side and in front of the church are not legal parking spots and you may be ticketed or towed!

This list is just a starting point. Many of you have found other places to park as well. Thanks for your cooperation.

Ingathering Ceremony

Rev. David M. Bryce

9:00 & 11:00 Church Service

Childcare for infants and young children

We  join together in our sanctuary to renew ourselves, and to re-dedicate ourselves to one another and to the ongoing life of spiritual growth. Bring water collected from a special place: from your travels over the summer, from a place nearby or from your home; these living waters will flow together as we join hearts together.

Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior Minister Rev. David Bryce

Remember: Bring water to the September 7 service!

Although we are now a "year round" congregation, with Sunday services right through the summer, we still have our traditional service of Ingathering and Rededication on the Sunday after Labor Day. This includes our water ceremony where we bring water from our "travels" of summer, whether water from far off places or from the taps in our own homes.

This year we will also enjoy, and express our appreciation for, the beauty of our newly painted and oiled sanctuary.

We will, however, be missing (temporarily) our Pilgrim window which is out for repair.

The changes in our sanctuary are "cosmetic"; they are not structural but change only the surface looks of the room. And yet, that surface change is so important as it changes how the space feels and therefore changes our experience of it.

That surface, cosmetic evaluation is so important for buildings and rooms. But it can be very damaging and misleading if we apply it to people. Too often we judge people on the basis of inessential criteria, by the clothes they wear, the state of their clothing or the style of their haircuts.

In viewing ourselves and others, may we always seek to see the inner person, not the outer presentation.

Music Notes from Alfa Radford

SR. CHOIR resumes rehearsals Sunday, Sept 7 at 9:25am. Sing 11:00 Service

NOVA CHOIR resumes rehearsals Thurs, Sept 4 at 6:45pm. Sing 9/14.

New singers welcome! Music is an integral part of our services, expressing beauty and transcendence which cannot be conveyed in spoken words alone. The choirs, the congregation, soloists, and instrumentalists, are all part of our Sunday music, as we lift our voices in hymns, anthems, and melodies. I look forward to it with joy!

YOUTH & CHILDREN'S CHOIRS RESUME MONDAY, SEPT 8:

Junior Choir (K-Gr.4)            6:30-7:00pm

Chancel Choir (Gr 5-6)         7:00-8:30pm (7:00-7:45 after "BB Birdie")

Youth Choir (Gr 7-High Sch)  7:00-8:30pm (7:45-8:30 after "BB Birdie")

FALL MUSICAL PRODUCTION: JR/CHANCEL/YOUTH CHOIRS: "BYE BYE BIRDIE" is on its way! Performances: Nov 6, 7, 8, 9. We'll begin work on this captivating musical on Monday evening, Sept 8, using the first few rehearsals to get acquainted with its wonderful songs. The story is of a rock and roll singer, Conrad Birdie, about to be inducted into the Army, and the antics of his agent, Albert Peterson, who arranges for a fun-filled farewell on the Ed Sullivan TV show. "Bye Bye Birdie" is a laugh a minute! There are lots of characters, so anyone who wants to sing in the Choirs and the show may join the fun! In mid-November, post production, we'll begin rehearsing seasonal music, so those who don't participate in "Birdie" may re-join (or join) the Choirs to sing for the holidays. Watch this page for details.

TRYOUTS for parts in BBB (Youth/Chancel only) will be Thursday, Sept 11, (following the 3:30 Reh) 4:30-6:30; and Friday, Sept 12 3:30-5:30. Choose one. Please mark the dates. See your 4-pg. mailing for more details.

NOTE: ALL Chancel/Youth choristers will be given a part in the musical.

- Joyful blessings! Alfa

Note from the Parish Board President

The Parish Board would like to invite you to join us next Thursday evening, 9/4, at 7:00 p.m., for a welcome back reception in the Parish Hall. Please join us for light refreshments, meet our new Acting Director of Religious Education, Charlotte Lehmann, and learn about what's happening at First Church.

This summer has been incredibly busy with the new Membership Database installation, sanctuary repair and painting, Pilgrim window de-installation and repair, kitchen cleaning and appliance updating, staff search, computer updating and cell service improvement, and other deferred maintenance. Our sanctuary has a new, warm color palette that is historic and in keeping with our architecture. We hope you enjoy it!

There are so many people to thank for their tremendous help and energy this summer that I hope to remember them all. Please forgive me if I have left someone out.

My heartfelt thanks go to the following people for their tireless work and energy:

To the Membership Database Committee: Miriam Baker, Lauren Corning, Lauren Crocker, Robin Hughes, Rosalie Kerr, Eva Patalas, Beth Westlund, James Hencke, and from the original working group: Bruce Kozuma, Bruce Logan, Paul Santos, and Stefan Frank. The hours of work you have all put into this monumental undertaking is incredibly appreciated and will benefit the church for decades to come.

Susan Street answered umpteen questions, painstakingly explained processes and procedures; pulled reports, sat in on conference calls, and has risen to the occasion time and again. Other staff and former staff, David Bryce, Alfa Radford, Wendy Conroy, Julie Ennis, Jim Staton, Lillian Anderson, and Laurel Whitehouse, have offered support and patiently answered questions in several rounds of interviews. Ed Yee provided invaluable assistance in getting our data out of Church Windows.

Many other church members met with the committee, answered questions, and offered insight and support instrumental to the process. These include Ben Bauer, Eliza Burden, Bob Corning, Ann Dexter, Debbie Dobbins, Deveaux Duckworth, Patricia Garcia, Gabby Garschina-Bobrow, Laurie Graham, John Howe, Jackie James, Scott Johnson, Bruce Kozuma, Tom Neel, Penny Schafer, David Warner, Jeanne Widmer, Jonathan Wolf, Leslie Wolf, Laura Wooster, and Marilyn Yee.

To the Pilgrim Window Committee: Nancy Davis (Chair), Gerri Strickler and Nanny Almquist. This has been a difficult process and we are fortunate to have such skilled, knowledgeable people on our team. Special thanks to Grant Monahon for his advice, skill and wisdom in negotiation, and in creating our legal documents for this enterprise.

To the DRE Search Committee: Catherine Claypoole (Chair), Eleanor Sugarman, Beth Westlund and Glen Valentine. Special thanks to Wendy Conroy, Jeanne Widmer and David Bryce for their attention and time with the interview process. Extra special thanks to Ann Dexter as our Human Resource guide! While our search for a more permanent DRE continues, we are delighted to have the skill and expertise of Charlotte Lehmann as our Acting DRE for this church year.

To the Building and House Committees: Bob Corning (Chair, Building), Mike Flamang, Ed Bing, Lanier Smythe (Chair, House), Michael Griffin, Penny Schafer, Glen Valentine, Lauren Meyer and Jeanne Mooney. Special thanks to Bob and Mike for answering my many questions during our Insurance inspection and handling Johnson House improvements. Special thanks to Roger Gallagher for his help on the Johnson House. Also special thanks to our church sanctuary colors committee: Ed Bing, Lanier Smythe, Jeanne Widmer, Penny Schafer, Betsy George and Alfa Radford for working with our Professional Interior Designer, Penny Carlhian, in helping us create a warm and welcoming sanctuary. Extra Special Thanks to Michael Griffin for completely cleaning the oven grease trap, completing kitchen inventory, getting and installing our new Refrigerator.

To Susan Street and Luis Carrion: for making sure that the contractors could get needed access/service throughout this long summer - they kept everything humming.

To Alfa Radford: For purchasing our new dimmable LED 100 watt bulbs in our church chandeliers out of her discretionary funds. These will save on energy and cost as well as brightening our sanctuary.

To Ed and Marilyn Yee: To Ed for updating staff computers and getting us enhanced cell coverage, and to Marilyn for making sure that the transfer of accounts to our new Treasurer, Penny Schafer was seamless.

To the Committee on Ministry: Gabby Garschina-Bobrow, Hayat Weiss, Eva Patalas, and Niti Seth for their long hours in reviewing and making meaning of the qualitative data in our survey results.

To the Parish Board: Jeanne Widmer, Penny Schafer, Todd Schatzki, Anne Donohue, Catherine Claypoole, Betsy George, Doug Burden, Jack Weis, Peter Guthrie, Sara Oaklander, and Tom Neel for their time in reviewing and voting on matters from near and far, on or off vacation.

And special thanks to Jeanne Widmer, Jonathan Wolf, Susan Street, Wendy Conroy, Alfa Radford and David Bryce for guiding me through a long summer with their grace, wit, and aplomb!

I am sure I have missed someone, so this, fortunately, will not be the last time you hear from me. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Yours sincerely,

Carolyn Howard, President, Parish Board

High School Youth Programs

A Meeting for Parents of 9th Graders Wednesday, Sept 10 at 7:30pm in the Parish Hall: Parents of 9th graders are invited to join us to learn more about our Coming of Age (COA) program. You'll have a chance to connect with each other, meet our COA mentors and learn about the year ahead. Ninth grade is the beginning of high school and the transition through adolescence and into young adulthood. It is a time when students "come of age." Many faiths recognize this milestone with a religious tradition - Catholic confirmation or Jewish bar/bat mitzvah, for example. Unitarian Universalists honor this time of transition for both youth and families with the Coming of Age program.

The first COA session for 9th graders and mentors will be Sunday, Sept 21 at 12:30pm. In the fall we'll have a few meetings at 12:30pm so that the 9th graders can attend musical rehearsals in the afternoons. After the musical our regular meeting time will be 4:15pm. Below is a list of the first few meeting dates. Be sure to mark your calendar with our first overnight retreat to the Heifer International Global Village on Sept 27. Your youth won't want to miss it!

9th graders should be registered prior to the start of the program.

Registration: http://tinyurl.com/m33ldqz. Please feel free to contact Julie at jennis@uubelmont.org if you have any questions.

CARING FOR OLDER ADULTS

Miriam Baker and Deborah Blumberg - Thu, Sept 4, 7:30pm, CR

Many people are juggling jobs, families and their parents' or other family members' increasing medical needs, frequent emergencies and ongoing need for care. How do we cope with the needs of our loved ones and find some balance in our own lives? What do we need to learn as we take on this task? How do we find information and community? If you find yourself in this position, you are welcome at this group for discussion and support. This is a drop-in group so please attend when it is convenient for you.

LIVING WITH SERIOUS ILLNESS

Nanny Almquist and Kathy Lind - Thu, Sept 11, 7pm, Library

Our lives are constantly changing and facing changes that involve illness makes us feel vulnerable. This ongoing support group provides a space and time to understand and process feelings and circumstances related to dealing with serious illness, both for caregivers and people in all stages of discovery and recovery.

"SUMMERS PILGRIMAGES"

Catherine Stalberg - Sunday, Sept 21, 12:30pm, Parlor

When David Bryce told us in June, "Your summer assignment is to go on a pilgrimage," did any of you take him up on it? If so, what did you do? Was it physical, did you travel? Was it emotional/mental/spiritual, perhaps with no traveling? Has your pilgrimage ended, and if so how? Was it in any way a UU pilgrimage? What did you learn from it? Join Catherine Stalberg in sharing your summer stories. Those who wish to listen only are welcome too. Refreshments provided.

WOMEN'S FALL POTLUCK SUPPER

Friday, Sept 26, 7pm, Upper Hall

A warm welcome to all First Church women and friends who would like to join us to share a meal together. This is a true potluck so bring whatever you like to eat and a beverage to drink. "EATING OUR VALUES" at THE COMMUNITY TABLE
Rachel Greenberger - Tuesday, Sept 30, 7:30pm, Library
Why do we care so much about the food we eat and serve? Community Table is a two-year-old social innovation developed by Food Sol at Babson College (www.foodsol.org) for sparking relevant and actionable community interactions on important topics connected to food. The theme of our Community Table will be "Eating Our Values" and UU member Martha Spaulding's daughter Rachel Greenberger, Director of Food Sol, will facilitate.
