Lay Pastoral Care Team
As members of the lay pastoral care team we are called to be present with you, members and friends, when you wish a compassionate listening ear during times of transition and stress whatever form it might take. We support those who are adjusting to change, loss, illness or death. We share in moments of celebration and happiness. We reach out to those who are unable to get out and who would like a visit. We share in situations that require a special touch of human kindness and an open ear. Please contact us if we might be of help or comfort. We count on the congregation to keep us in touch with pastoral needs of our community.   - Janet Amphlett, Devon Beckett, Nancy Davis, Steve Saar, and Martha Spaulding

ACTION IS OUR PRAYER

Grow Clinic! Grow Clinic!

Can it be that we're already speeding toward the end of our church year? That also means that our GROW CLINIC families will be losing one of their supports (us!) to help feed their infants and toddlers over the long summer months. Join in to help STOCK THE SHELVES FOR SUMMER. Thanks!!! FOOD: ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MEDICINES

The Elizabeth Seton Nutrition Center and School was founded in 1979 and continues today as recovery program for malnourished children. Located in one of the most impoverished regions of the country, far from any tourist destinations, it is entirely locally-run. As a life-line to the growing community of La Saona, it provides essential family, medical and educational services to both Dominicans and Haitians which are not otherwise available. As President of the organization for the last decade, we are always looking for support. Right now we are looking for in-kind donations of two item types: BASEBALL EQUIPMENT for the young athletes who are kept off the streets with their baseball activities (anything goes), as well as GENTLY USED fancy dress which will be used by a group of women for a "rent the runway" type microloan business run by our mothers. Wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses, men's suits, fancy shoes, bags, jewelry, first communion dresses, prom dresses...anything that can be rented to families so that they can participate in the joyous occasions which are celebrated, at a much lower cost. Can be dropped on large front porch at 30 Gorham Road at any time. Email me with any questions meclough60@gmail.com.

Join Mary Beekman and Musica Sacra for The course of true love never did run smooth, this Saturday, May 10 at 8pm at 1st Church Congregational, 11 Garden St. in Cambridge. Reflections from Rev. David Bryce, Senior MinisterRev. David Bryce

On Saturday, April 26, Jim Staton and I attended the annual meeting of the Massachusetts Bay District of the Unitarian Universalist Association, a joint meeting with the Clara Barton District to our west.

(Jim Staton does not advertise such things, but he was re-elected as Treasurer of the Mass Bay District.)

After a worship service, we listened to presentations by the Presidents of the two Districts; by Sue Phillips, Regional lead for UUA staff in our area; and by Jim Key, Moderator of the UUA.

One of the consistent themes of meetings I have attended over the past few years is that of change: change in society, change in technology, and therefore change in how organizations must and can function. This meeting was no exception.

We were reminded that in 1961 when the UUA was established by the merger of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church in America:

     most homes had a telephone, and some had two;

if you wanted someone to review a document, you would put it in an envelope, put stamps and an address on the envelope, and in just days it could be received by someone clear across the country; and,

many people had machines that would word process and print at the same time--you could just press a key and a letter would appear on the paper (a typewriter).

Things have changed. If organizations (including congregations) continue to function today as they did fifty years ago, or continue to have the same expectations of their members that they did fifty years ago, they may be in for disappointment.

     How must we change?

SECOND FRIDAY COFFEEHOUSE

Mark your calendars for May 9 for an amazing  performance by Heather Quay and Jon Svetkey with an opening act by Paul Judge and Jim Wooster.

Heather Quay and Jon Svetkey have been singing together for over a dozen years. Together, and separately, they have performed at venues including Club Passim, Johnny D's, Cafe 939 at Berklee College, Columbia U and the now defunct Old Vienna Kaffehaus. They are both accomplished singer-songwriters, their repertoire of classic pop, folk and country songs showcases their love of two-part harmony and fun.

Paul and Jim are regular performers at The First Church in Belmont as members of Positive Energy, and the Blood Mountain Brothers and occasionally as a duet. They have an uplifting style that features great vocals and mellow guitar accompaniment.

SCIENCE AND SPIRITUALITY
Thursday, May 15, 7:30pm, Conference Room

Edwin Taylor will lead a discussion on two draft chapters of Edmund Robinson's book "Evil for Evil." Robinson, former senior minister of UU Belmont, started as a lawyer; at midlife he graduated from Harvard Divinity School and became a UU minister. Before this professional shift, he had taken on the case of a convicted murderer. His first chapter recounts this case, leading up to his client's execution. That experience led Robinson to write his book on evil. His first two draft chapters are at the website eftaylor.com/sands.
